Problem with focusing 5D using the screen

Lately (very recently) my 5D has developed a problem with focusing using the screen.
While the focusing with chipped adapters is perfect, the focusing screen gives me wrong distance, in other words, it makes me focus more distant than the aim.
To give an example, if I close focus to an object that is distant 20 cm, if I focus using the chipped adapter, focus is ok, if I focus using the screen, the focus falls somewhere more distant, like 21 or 22 centimetres.
If I focus more distant objects, the gap widens, for instance if I screen-focus on an object that is distant 2 meters, the real focus falls on 2,20 meters.

I have tried moving the focusing screen (unmounting and remounting it) but I obtain the same result.

What if I remove the metal shin that is between the screen and the pentaprism? Would the situation improve or get worse?

Any idea for fixing the problem?

your mirror is probably slowly falling down and register distance change

poilu, if the problem was in the mirror, don't you think that also the electronic focus confirmation would give a wrong result?

I think that the focus hardware is behind the semi-transparent mirror and it isn't disturbed by mirror move

I read a bit about the subject, it seems that the mirror just falls. Mine seems very solidly anchored to it's place...

I just make hypothesis based on a previous post about micro movements

Today, one year after having shaved my 5D, I had to shave it again. After one year of use, micro movements must have happened, and the mirror begun to not clear the way to some of my lenses again

Yes, correct. Maybe you are right, but I'm not sure.

maybe you discovered the problem early because of manual focus (screen off & lens clearance)
a AF user will only understand it when the mirror falls
if it can be fixed just by gluing the mirror, it must be a easy fix

if this were my 5D i'd be wondering why it started all-of-a-sudden.

yes it seems like adjusting the focus screen shimming will fix vf focus; it may be physically easier to *add* a shim and check which way vf focus gets adjusted, before removing and possibly destroying the existing shim and then discovering more shim not less was needed...

Fact is, I inspected with a loupe, I can not see any abnormalities. It there is a problem with the mirror it must be really microscopical.

I would like to try, but I have no idea where to get extra shims.

some folks have used material from thin plastic bag, and thin paper such as for rolling cigarettes; this is what i'd use for a simple test to see if i needed to remove the original shim.

Orio, you can use the tape from the first aid kit Laughing Below you can see my 350D's shim. I had same focus problem but it was opposite side Cool First I added this tape but the gap got bigger, so I took the shim out completely.
In your 5D adding some tape will solve the problem.
