First tests with the Porst 55mm 1.2

Got from Yalçin, I've had no time until now to test it.
It comes with a Pentax-K mount, so I used the *istDS for the testing.

It's very complicated (to me) to use it wide open. Probably the DOF being so narrow makes difficult to control the flare. Closed down it has a nice perfomance in terms of sharpness and colors.

It does match very well with the *istDS, light metering is accurate in manual mode, even in backlight situations.

To my taste, the greens are resolved very well:

Difficult to control flare, sometimes giving a surrealistic effect (Not in this case...)

In summary, an interesting lens but difficult to manage (to me).

Kind regards,

Jes.

nice pics!

Perhaps you need LiveView!

However, i think my Nikon 50/1.2 is quite easy to use even at f1.2 without using LiveView (but using my splitscreen).

Very nice results Jesito - I agree with you about using really fast lenses wide-open though, gonna have to think about a split-screen Wink

Jes,
looks like it performs way better on your Pentax than on my 5D Smile It gives still dreamy results but I guess this is the characteristics of this Porst.

Hi Alex,

I've got Liveview on the Olympus, but no adapter yet for it Wink.

Wel, the Dandelion XXX adapter that I got recently it's supposed to support the Pentax-K lenses, (although I've to figure out how).

(I'm afraid the Pentax will be in the leaving lane soon Sad so no further investments on it).)

Kind regards,
Jes.

Thanks!. I was thinking of getting one, but I don't want to invest more on the Pentax....

Kind regards,
Jes.

I've to try further the lens, it's too difficult for me.

Kind regards.

I own the Porst Color Reflex Auto 55/1.4.
I bought it because I could get it cheap ( Rolling Eyes ) and with the hope, it would be a good available-light-performer.

My experiences:
A light-value of 1.4 is very hard to control due to dof.
The Porsts are O.K. but not standing on the top of image-quality.
Comparing I think that the Vivitars are often better.

With this "no-name" brands you never know, what is "behind".

Not in this case, the Porst 55mm 1.2 is very well known as made by Tomioka and is considered not a bad lens...
I've been trying it under the sunlight and seems to be quite sharp and neat, with a good bokeh:

To me is very fine for the Pentax. Probably I'll keep it as long as I have Pentax-K cameras.

Kind regards,

Jes.

I'm glad to hear that Smile
Giving some time to a lens is a vise path to follow I guess as I was thinking to sell my Nikkor 1.8/85 but now I think it performs as good as an Canon EF 1.8/85 center-wise and this is very good for concert shootings Smile

Jes, this lens is made by Cosina but of course Tomikka designed same as
ML 55/1.2 and even multi-layer coating too (this is not 100% myself, though
it looks like it). But this is only true for earlier serial number ones, later
Cosina changed its optical formula by their own, this is what Mr. K told us
in some place in Tokyo. (mine is S/N 2164)

Ooops, I like the first one best and like 3-rd one too.

You got great result with Pentax I think better than my Olympus E-1 result with same lens. I have too look a first DS I think. Such a great camera!

I do not complain regarding quality of Porst however can not check full performance of my lens because aperture is stuck wide open. All photos I can make only at 1.2. BTW, it is not as good as my Tomioka Yashinon 1.2/55 wide open.

Hi Voytek,

Nice collection there ! You have the more stylish version of the Ludwig Meritar, and the old-style Biotar. And is that a 4.5cm Tessar ?

PostPosted: Sun Feb 22, 2009 6:33 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

No, Tessar is 4.5/4cm not 4.5cm. Biotars are 2 both chrome, one black, second "silver". I have couple of zebra Meritars M42, if you want to swap write me PM with some lens list, please.

Thanks Attila. I tried first the K100D Super, later on I moved to the K10D, and finally I got the *istDS who is the best (to my taste) for manual lenses. Light measuring is better than with the other models.

*istDSs have become scarce, people like them because the clear pentaprism and viewfinder (instead of the pentamirror in latter models).

I'll also keep the Oly because almost any lens could be mounted on it Smile.

Kind regards,
Jes.

Hi Voytek, I've been unable to get pictures like yours without a lot of flare... I'm not sure if I miss something when working wide open.

BTW, you have a very nice collection, Wink.

Kind regards,
Jes.

Some day I will take a picture of my all lenses, I hope that Flektogon 4/20 would be good to "fit" them all at once Twisted Evil

More samples from broken Porst. All photos at 1.2. I changed a bit WB and added a little noise. Also 3 photos are cropped. First photo shows original, second improved, either 3, 4, 5.
