I'm looking for a good 72mm diffusion or soft focus filter, to go on the Nikon 180mm f/2.6 AIS ED lens I just bought.

I have 58mm filters to trade. USA only, please.

a 72mm UV filter + vaseline works pretty well (and is adjustable Wink )

even cheaper, you can breathe on the front glass, it will be much better than any filter - just remember to clean well the glass afterwards.

I agree about the UV filter and Vaseline. This option gives as many options and control as you like and has remained a favourite for many (Like myself) for many years.
The relatively inexpensive option for 72mm is a Generic Cokin P series set from China. With this option you would also be able to have a choice of soft and diffusion filters as well as SFX ones
Finally PS is about the best way to get your soft focus/diffusion looks. The options there are almost limitless, perhaps the only limit would be imagination.
A simple basic one is Blur on a duplicate layer and change the mode to Soft light, darken, screen or Lighten to get the effect you want.

I've actually done that over the years, myself, but in my old age, I want a REAL diffusion/soft-focus filter to complement my new Nikkor 185mm f/2.8 lens, for portrait work.

Tiffen makes a series of "Softnet" filters which incorporate the netting between glass layers in a filter mount...Maybe this is what you are looking for? Here's a link

The majority of soft filters are merely convenience versions of the vaseline, stocking etc. recipes - if any, they perform slightly worse (but more consistent over time).

There are good, true optical soft filters (e.g. Duto or Softar), but new ones are stunningly expensive in large sizes. List price for the Softar is $417 according to Schneider - which would be in the same range as a used 200mm Imagon...

Softars sometimes show up quite cheap on ebay, as many sellers don't know about their value. But it takes quite a lot of lurking to get hold of a rare size filter. You'll probably have to take something in range and fit it with an adapter.
