On a dutch auction site a Pentax SMC 77/1,8 Limited is offered for Eu 500,--.
Is this a good deal and what is so special/limited that warrants this price tag? _________________ [5D][20D][50D][70D][EOS-M][Tamron Adaptall lenses][M42 lenses]

It's an AF lens. All metal construction. I think the price new is $800. So 500 EUR is expensive.
Compared to say the Canon 85mm f/1.8 it is quite a bit more expensive. But it's expensively built. Kinda like an old Pentax Takumar.
EDIT: forgot to mention, it's almost L class optically. All the Pentax "Star" and "Limited" lenses are higher-grade than their usual "FA" ones.

I'd say the price differential is mostly in the build quality. Although optically the Limiteds are supposed to be very good (and it had better be for 2X the price of the Canon 85/1.8!)

I will stay with my Canon 85 f/1.8 and save my money order to upgrade to the canon 85 f/1.2 _________________ [5D][20D][50D][70D][EOS-M][Tamron Adaptall lenses][M42 lenses]

Yes the 85/1.2 is definitely a better lens. At a huge price differential!
Anyway the Pentax 77/1.8 is not an "old" or collectible lens, it's a modern lens, so it would only make sense to Pentax users.
In keeping with the "Manual Focus Lenses" theme, this review
http://www.16-9.net/lens_tests/pentax85/index.html
compares the ultra-rare Pentax 85mm f/1.4 A* with the Canon 85mm f/1.2L II. The Pentax does better, surprisingly. But it's quite expensive (almost as much as the Canon) and is manual focus. |

"Almost L class"? I think that's an insult to the FA77, which undoubtedly is one of the best lenses ever made.
Some photos taken by me with the FA77:

Spotmatic, the FA 77/1.8 shows a bit of softness wide open and sharpens up when stopped down. That puts it on the same level as the Canon 85/1.8
The L lenses are almost universally already sharp wide-open. Although the link I show above, the 85/1.2L is very slightly edged out by the 85/1.4 A* -- I'm sure you'll agree that the 85/1.4 A* is a better lens optically than the 77/1.8 |
