Can I mount old manual Nikon lenses on Canon (5D to be specific?)

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=180295833891

I am interested in this 35mm f/1.4 in particular. Is their anyone using this combination? Any known problems? Any other points?

How does it compare to the contax 35mm 1.4? Or even the canon? (What other 35mm f/1.4 could I consider?)
Thanks

I would opt for the Contax, but the Nikkor might end up cheaper.

Be reminded that you have to work stepped down if mounted on Canon.

And make sure that the rear part of the lens does not hit the mirror (or vice versa).

I would rather the contax, as I use a few of those lenses. The nikon is enticing me though as I have never used a nikon. And yes, the contax 35mm seem to go for high money, and their are not many of them about.

I would like to know if the rear element would be a problem before I buy, Smile
thanks.

Sure you can! And many manual Nikkors are excellent lenses that are found at low bargain prices because of the great quantity. Manual Nikkors have been the first manual lenses I used on my Canon 300D back then. I still have many of them, although I now have to sell some because of financial need. But they are top notch lenses and much better than most Canon L lenses that you could buy or dream about.

I am absolutely sure that there will be no problem with the 5D. I have used many Nikkor lenses on my EOS cameras including the 5D, and never had a single problem with any of them.

I can not compare because I don't have the Nikkor. I have the Contax though and it's my absolute preferred lens.

I am positive that both the Contax and the Nikkor will look better than the Canon. Canon has never been good with wide angle lenses.

Well, if you have a LOT of money, you could consider the Leica Summilux 1.4/35. But beware, I read a comparative test once, and the Distagon was judged better - at a fraction of the price (not that the Distagon is cheap in absolute terms... but compared to the Summilux, it is).

Thank you Orio... Smile

I have planar 50mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.4, both amazing. Also the distagon 35mm 2.8, which is great but I would rather a 1.4 lens.

To be honest I would never consider the Canon. Likewise the Leica, too expensive.

So it is between Contax and Nikon. Their seems to be a lot of the Nikons about and at a cheaper price than the contax. Hmmm, decisions. Smile

Hopefully I will find some solid info on this lens on the 5d compatibility. For some reason I am more interested in the Nikon, I think because I want to try something else.

Now I realize that with compatibility, you probably refer to mirror clearing issues.

Well, there are a few Contax lenses that don't clear the mirror. I have shaved my 5D mirror so I don't have this problem anymore. The problematic lenses are the Tessar 2.8/45, the Distagon 4/18, and some others.
About Nikkors, there are a few wide angle lenses that can not be mount due to excessive protruding of rear "flange". This is easilt solved by sandpapering the flange down until it allows the lens to mount. This operation does not compromise the compatibility of the lens with the Nikkor cameras.

I have the 35/1.4 and it is a great lens. A bit soft at the edges wide open, but sharp by f2. I like the OOF rendition and it has all the normal nikon colour fidelity. I have not yet used it on my 40D, but will have to try it out now the idea has been brought up.
