Yesterday I took my Helios outside for the first time. I bought it some time ago, but I couldn't use it because of slightly deformed M42 screw - now fixed.

My Helios is not 40 nor 40-2, but a hybrid of both - optical block was taken from 40-2; mechanical block taken from 40. I bought it on ebay - it was surprisingly cheap (maybe because of the silver-black look), but glass is in mint condition, no scratches, haze, fungus, or dust. Aperture works fine and infinity focus is accurate.

This lens is kind a obstinate. Back-light and reflective surfaces create a LOT of funny OOF lights. On the other side, this Helios also creates very specific atmosphere and feel. When stopped down, it can be surprisingly sharp (nowhere near to my Pancolar, but really very useable)

my first tries...

f/1.5

I love the 5th - it's not sharp, the bookeh is not creamy-smooth, but there is something I like

f/4 (±)

f/8-f/11

1:1

f/1.5

f/8

I also used my helios 40-2 today for the first time. Terrible weather so I just snapped a few pics in my back garden. So far its looking great. I also recieved a split focussing screen which really helped out.
at f1.5

A very "pictorial" lens.

It seems to focus much closer than the Biotar 75/1.5 - that one doesn't get closer than 1m.

I have seen the weird bokeh effect on the Biotar also, maybe not as much.

Shocked Beautiful dreamy picture, this is the reason why Orio so much love this lens.

If it wasn't for the new Zeiss lens for EF mount, I'd seriously consider buying this lens or Biotar 85mm.

Beautiful pics BTW.

I am really amazed how well the split screen worked out. I had a quick go with the helios in the morning before I installed the screen and I was basically guessing as to what was in focus. f1.5 was far too narrow for my eyes alone, especially on the tiny sony a100 viewfinder.

I really like the mood it imposes on photographs. It was all the examples I saw on this site that made me get it. I was a bit worried that it wouldn't work out the same for me but I am really really happy with its performance.

Actually, it's partly true, but in general I love to shoot this lens at f/8, for the incredible detail that it renders. Smile

I have the original Helios 40 & it's one of my two favorite MF lenses. I really like the way it renders the background.

I too had flare issues. I purchased a 3-stage 67mm rubber lens hood made/sold by Fotodiox. The original Helios 40 (my version) has a 66mm filter, not the 67mm threads of the 40-2 version. I removed the filter screw-on section of the Fotodiox hood (it's not glued - only a stretch fit) from the hood and simply stretched the rubber hood over the end of the lens. It works perfectly. It stays in place and doesn't interfer with focusing.

wHEN i SEE THESE SAMPLES, i DIE FOR THIS LENS, BUT FIVE MINUTES AFTER, i REMEMBER THAT IT'S HEAVY FOR ME.

I don't like tripods, I love handheld. Street's moments are very fast for

me. I can't use tripods. Each times I used it, the pics were gone.

Good luck

Rino.

I have this lens from long time ago, I will need hood only. This lens is not that heavy you can perfectly use without tripod , because fast and sharp.

In fact, yesterday was the first time I got a hand-ache caused by my 2-hours photo-walk (SD14 + power-grip + 40-2 permanently in hand) Laughing

No factory made hood, you should follow previous post.

I just found out, that an 67x25mm "hansa aux ring", which I got along with another lens, perfetly fits on this Helios and can be used as a hood Smile

@Lazzaros Your H40-2 has a 67 mm thread not 66 mm like the H40. You should be able to find a hood.

One day, I will get my hands on this, unless I get the CZ Planar 1.4/85 first. These two have been in my wishlist for a long while.
