Another incredibly interesting article from Marco Cavina, I could find it just in italian (unfortunately) but just looking at the images could cause a "drooling" attack to all Zeiss fans: Contax 25/1.4 for example Wink

Jokes apart, is it just my impression or Canon lenses don't have a comparable quality to Nikkors, Contax, etc?

I'm not an expert but looking at the example of the new 5D MkII on dpreview, shot with a Canon zoom I feel precious my "el chepo" plasicky Nikkors zoom. The details were fuzzy with very low microcontrast (something I noted also in some 1dsMkIII test shots with expensive L lenses).

And sincerely I don't believe the "digital myth" that huge MP sensors need newer lenses etc... Just using a decent scan one can surpass the 1ds and new 5D sensor resolution and the detail is there with older lenses. Poilu bellows scan are there to witness I'm not dreaming.

I second your opinion. There are some exceptions (the EF-S Macro 60mm is as strong as any Leica or Contax), but for most part, I find Canon lenses to deliver "plastic" results. I used to have a very nice lens the EF 2/100, which was sharper than my Planar 2/100, but completely lacking balls, if you know what I mean. I ended up selling it. Now the only EF lenses that I have are the 1.8/50, which I keep only for my work, and the above mentioned EF-S Macro, which is, in fact, the only AF lens that I judge on par with my best manual lenses.
As for contemporary AF Nikkors, I don't have them so I can not judge. I have older manual Nikkors, and I like them, especially the pre-AI which are much close in character to German lenses.

I have some first generation nikkor AF lenses (such as 180/2.Cool and I can certainly vouch for their quality. Where I can compare directly (the 28/2.8 for example) there is little difference in quality. I do not own any of the latest AF versions.
