Hi to all,
here comes a bit urgent question because of to raise or not to raise situation on [A]
A) [80-90$]Tamron SP 70-210mm F/3.5 Model 19AH: http://www.adaptall-2.com/lenses/19AH.html
B) [220-320$] Tamron SP 80-200mm F/2.8 LD Model 30A: http://www.adaptall-2.com/lenses/30A.html
C) [475$] Canon EF 70-200 F/4 L
Speed can be important if I shoot concerts so [B] is more logical but it's not very comman one; I've missed one although I gave 151$ for 1st then 251$ on the 2nd. Threre is huge demand for me shooting concerts but I'm not sure at the moment.
I'm outbid on [A] so I don't know if I must raise or not.
Questions are:
1) What is the results of a [A] vs [C] comparision?
2) Pass [A], look for a [B]?
3) Shortcut question : What would you choose?
I don't wnat to buy one then sell and buy better so one shot is my goal at the moment _________________ My name is "Yalcin", and exactly "Yalçın" and here you can find my MF samples:

Well if you need AF then that's the end of it...
In my experience the 70-200/4L IS is very sharp, even wide open. It's one of Canon's best tele zooms (sharper than the 70-200/2.8L although I haven't had the chance to compare).
The question is, what do you need more: AF or 1 stop faster? I'd think for concerts, from a medium distance, you don't need AF so much but you would need the extra light. |

Just compare them by their image quality. Then based on those opinion I'll ask myself the speed question.
I want it to be my all around lens with Pancolar 50/1.8 and a Oly 28/3.5.
I can even sell my AF 28-135 IS USM but I'm not sure at the moment. _________________ My name is "Yalcin", and exactly "Yalçın" and here you can find my MF samples:

I have never used the Tamron 80-200, so I can't comment on it. The Tamron 70-210/3.5 is a nice lens. Several years ago I bought a Canon FD (manual focus) 80-200 f4L to replace the Tamron. In daily shooting I didn't see much difference between the lenses. Since the Canon was much more expensive, I sold it and kept the Tamron. If you watch keh.com, they sometimes have the Tamron for a good price.
I have not used the EF 70-200/4, but I do use the 70-200/2.8 all the time. It's a very nice lens, and I imagine the f4 is at least as good. It works well the the Canon 1.4, but poorly with the 2x. A great lens if you need AF, but probably not worth the extra cost if you don't.
I have had a problem with both the Canon and Tamron lens. With the Tamron lens, I have bumped the button that releases the lens from the Adaptall mount. Not good. It was much more of a problem when I was using a Tamron 300/2.8, but it is somewhat a concern with the zoom. With the Canon, the front section of the barrel (in front of the focusing screen) gets loose. This may be less of a problem with the f4 lens because it is smaller and lighter than the f2.8 lens. It's also more likely to be a problem if you use the lens a lot.
The Tamron 70-210 also focuses much closer than the Canon 70-200, but that probably wouldn't make a difference when shooting concerts.

Atilla I've seen 80-85USD ones before so I said high but if you compare the price with the 550USD price tag of an EF 70-200/4 this one is still a bargain _________________ My name is "Yalcin", and exactly "Yalçın" and here you can find my MF samples:

AF is not important unless the action is fast.
Also for concerts you should choose speed over IS.
IS obviously does not stop motion in your subject.
Only the shutter can do that.
Take the Tammie or buy a nice prime.
Contax 2.8/180 cost less than the Canon zoom. _________________ Moderator |

I've used non SP 80-210/3.8-4 in my last concert (it's been sold and a new SP (52A) is being bouht), it was pretty nice:
I generally used my EF 28-135/3.5-5.6 IS USM before tamron cause zoom is essential in concerts as I don't have the ability to move during the performance (concert halls are all with seats, nowhere to move) and IS really helps without a tripod but it is really slow with even ISO1600 and +2EV. This one is my essential concert lens at the moment:

[below:Used in a huge print for a guitar festival]
for ones interested in concert shooting, I have a huge collection

Canon 5D and 80-200/2.8 will be a great duo _________________ My name is "Yalcin", and exactly "Yalçın" and here you can find my MF samples:

Yes take the 2.8 or make no change at all.
Look at your results. You won't find massive improvements. _________________ Moderator |

I wasn't expecting this but I've got a really nice offer and found a very clean 5D with just 2.5K click and full box for just 1560USD which is a really great price for Turkey and even for USA He has bought a new D700 and no place for the lovely 5D so this is my luck; no bank wire transfer no 'if?'s, no disturbing my American (also Turkish ) friend, I'm really happy at the moment
I've 1000USD ready, not enough but he will reserve me for 3 days and as I've 2 weeks to payday I'll find 560USD from friends and buy this one so my new 5D will arrive in a week!

Mine is 1050 Euros, really nice price for a very nice condition 5D (gray market but I don't need the guarantee because of the shaving modification) and even great for Turkey as offical price tag of 5D in here is eye-popping 2955 Euros! _________________ My name is "Yalcin", and exactly "Yalçın" and here you can find my MF samples:

I have been shooting concerts quite often.
I had Canon EF 70-200 4L USM (not is version) and all I wanted was more speed so I could take sharper results or shoot with lover ISO.
EF 70-200 4L USM is a lot cheaper than IS version..
I sold the 70-200 4L USM and bought EF 80-200 2.8L which I'm VERY pleased with when it comes to concert shots and I love Nikon 105/1.8 also in concerts
Concert shots are best without flash if you want all the smoke and color
lights in normal way and then you NEED speed from the lens and if
those 3 are the ones I vote for 80-200 2.8! _________________ EOS 5D mk II

I'm a flash hater in concerts like every musician so speed is important. I won't buy any more zooms and my priorities are Tamron SP 80-200/2.8 LD and an ultra wide, I'll try my friend's EF 17-40 L to understand how much wide do I need. _________________ My name is "Yalcin", and exactly "Yalçın" and here you can find my MF samples:
