What is the best Manual lens you've ever used in the focal range of 85mm to 135mm that are equal or faster than f/2?

please no collectible item like Contax 85/1.2 ....

Nikkor 85mm f1.8 NON-AI, AI I found black one (AI) Significantly better even Nikkor-H 85mm 1.8 is an excellent lens.

Carl Zeiss Jena Pancolar 80mm f1.8 MC M42 top lens very good contrast, constant sharpness at all aperture.
Carl Zeiss Jena Biotar 75mm f1.5 sharpest lens what I ever seen even at wide open.

Helios 40mm f1.5, Helios-40-2 f1.5 , beautiful bokeh pleasant sharpness at wide open, tack sharp stopped down.

Carl Zeiss 85mm f1.4 (next one my wish list) Superb!
Nikkor 105mm f1.8 nice sharp lens , even at wide open.
Carl Zeiss 135mm f2 unbelievable lens on my wishlist.
Sigma,Spiratone 135mm f1.8 usable at wide open, I love it.
SMC Takumar 85mm f1.8 , Auto-Takumar 85mm f1.8 both are lovely sharp lens,with nice bokeh.

I leave out the 135mm for now (too many to add them to the list).

85-105mm:

1. Nikkor-H 1.8/85
1. Volna-3 2.8/80
3. Asahi Super-Takumar 2.8/105
3. Jupiter-9 2.0/85
5. Meyer Optik Trioplan 2.8/100 V
5. MC Kaleinar-5N 2.8/100
7. Hanimex Tele-Lens 4/100

Three times two lenses on one level...

My taste are same as Klaus here.

Contax 1.4/85 the classic Portrait lens. Perfect for it's design in most every way.

Contax 2/100 Sharper at open than the 85 is at f2. Seems to have a brighter field and better shadow detail.
I think this is my preception coming from the slightly longer FL.

Zuiko 2/90 The first samples from Attila wide open look really great.

Leica R 2/90 Summicron. Not as sharp as the Zeiss lenses until f4. Nice 3d and neutral skin tones. Great for portraits.

I would take Either of the contax lenses before these last two however.

Never got past the nikkors"

105/1.8
135/2
85/1.4
Voigtlander 90/3.5 (I know it's too slow)

All very sharp, nice OOF and good colours/contrast.

it is difficult to make portrait faster than f/2
at 3.5 about all lens are superb
I read that in USA you can buy a lens, test it and return it if you don't like it
Check them all, keep the best and share your samples here

My only favorite lens.

85mm - Canon fd 85mm f1.2L . I convert this lens for Olympus 4/3 and the pictures in portrait photography make me sold Carl Zeiss Planar T* 85mm f1.4. Laughing

90mm - Leica Elmerit R 90mm f2.8 . Great skin tone with the half price of Leica 2/90mm but equal quality that make me sold 2/90mm already. Laughing

100mm - Carl Zeiss Planar T* 100mm f2 . Good all F-stop especially f-2.

135mm - Angenieux 135mm f3.5 Exakta mount . Great skin tone and bokeh.

That's a very different class of lenses, the ones for Leica M. I was considering (D)SLR lenses only, this is how I understood the question, not rangefinder lenses.

OK, Klauss.

In SRL Nikon, canon, CZ, all are superb, minimal diferent between them. Not matter which take, all will be OK.

Jupiter 9, CZJ 135 f3.5, Pentacon 135 f2.8, I like them all and not too expensive, also easy to get hold of Very Happy

Poolhall

I have the CZJ and the J9. In each type, they are very good lenses.

I can't understand the topic as look for the cheap ones or the SRL lens. I understand the question as the list of the better lenses in the 85-135 range f/2 or up, not matter SRL or rangefinder, cheap or not, only the quality of the lens.

The rangefinder lenses (that are the best in this case) aren't lenses? Perhaps they are, not?

I think that rangefinder lenses are better only for wide.
They can use design that are not possible on slr because of the mirror.
For normal and telephoto, this doesn't apply and there is no reason to be better.

some result from photodo who is a reliable source for mtf
but we know here that sharpness is only a part of the equation Wink

Code:

Canon EF 85/1,2L USM :  grade 4.6
Contax Planar T* 85/1,4 :  grade 4.6
Tokina AT-X 90/2,5 macro :  grade 4.6
Summilux M 75/1,4 : grade 4.5
Summicron M 90/2  : grade 4.3
Nikkor AF 85/1,8 : grade 4.2
Olympus 90/2 macro : grade 4.2
Olympus 100/2 : grade 4.2
Tamron SP 90/2,5 macro : grade 4.2
Vivitar 105/2,5 Macro Series 1 : grade 4.0

photodo old test

In the wide lenses, the rangefinder have a plus in quality.

In normal lenses, i never saw a beter lens than the Sumicron-M 50/2, six elements in the minolta leitz era. I can't find the words to explain the quality of the lens.

In the portrait lenses, the leica M have the best lnses: summilux 1,4/75, summicron 90/2,, elmarit 90/2,8. All SUPERB. No one can win over them.

In tele lens I agree with you, except for the elmar 135/4 - it's actually an apochromatic lens.

Regards, Rino.

I meant to ask for lenses that can be used DSLR.
I'm not sure whether that includes M lenses or not... Rolling Eyes

Price is not a issue, although I wouldn't name super exotic lenses like Contax 85/1.2...

OK, huhging.

Your first post didn't say this. Now I know your intention.

And then, for me the contax 1,4/85 and the canon 1,2/85.

Regards, Rino.

It seems that majority of you like Contax 85/1.4...
Any particular reason?

If the price were same, would you still choose Contax one over Leica 85/1.4?

I'm also definitely going to get the Canon FD85/1.2 in the future.
I wonder how that lens competes against Contax and Leica.

I think it has "that" look that is so pleaseant for Portraits. Nice color and Contrast/3D with perfec amount of sharpness. It of course can become more sharp stopped down and becomes more versatile like this. It is also the best Value in this FL compared to the price of others. Truly it is a pleasure to use this lens also and it is beautiful to look at Wink
