I just tried to see how much of a difference a hood makes. I almost never use one, it's fiddly, inconvenient, takes space, gets lost, looks weird, any excuse will do. Well, after this quick test I think I'll change my attitude towards hoods.

The diference is obvious!
This was with CZJ Flektogon 35mm/2.8. I tried a few others and generally the wider the lens and the more exposed the front element, the more a hood helps. _________________ my flickr stream |

This is striking! The flare is so prominent that it becomes its own graphic element. Reminds me of an album cover. I love these shots here.
Here is one I captured with the Vivitar Series 1 600/8 Solid Cat.

It was fun when I tested some lenses last winter, including the Vivitar. If stopped down to the smallest aperture setting and taking a picture with the sun right in the center, several zoom lenses produces similar flare!
