Flare seems to be an unwanted, cast aside nuisance in photography.
I think it can be beautiful!!

The problems with flare and refractive artifacts is that I consider these to be reasons for discarding a photo, so they don't usually make it onto any sort of permanent digital archive. But I did find one.

I recall this trip to the ocean -- geez, it's been 10 years ago now -- and when I got the photos back, I discovered that quite a few had lens artifacts in them. Some of these refractive phenomena had very interesting shapes, but most of them I did not digitize -- or if I did, they're on a computer or a hard drive I don't have access to. Anyway, I have only one photo that shows some of these artifacts, two to be precise. They're not all that obvious, but if you look for them, you'll find them.

Thanks, and I agree. These pics were taken from a cliff overlooking a beach just north of Ft. Bragg, California. One of the nicest places I ever visited for sunsets.

Film was pretty ordinary -- just Kodak 200 shot at box speed. Camera was an EOS Elan IIe and lenses were the EF 70-210/4 and Tamron 24-70 Aspherical. This shot was taken with the Tamron 24-70.

I also don't tend to bother keeping images with lots of flare. The two worst offenders I've used are the Tamron SP 35-80mm f2.8-3.8 and the Tamron SP 24-48mm f3.5-3.8 which create lots of bright blue flares across most of the image if provoked.

These are two that I've kept. This one is off an ancient nikkor-N.C auto 24mm f2.8.
