Hi,

A friend gave me some negative roll films (120 format) and I will have the opportunity to travel next month and I'm thinking about using them.
Mostly some Kodak Ektar 100 and Ilford Pan-F, I like both =)

The problem is that I sold my beloved Fujica GA645 a long time ago and let's be honest, a Mamiya 645 is not the most travel friendly camera..
I have three options left and I would like your opinion if you don't mind.

- A Zeiss Ikonta 521 , 6x4.5 with a Novar Anastigmat 75mm F3.5 Triplet
- A Voigtlander Perkeo 1, 6x6 with a Vaskar 75mm F4.5 triplet
- A Zeiss Ikonta 521/16, 6x6 with a Tessar 75mm F3.5

I'm very familiar with the last two, but I never used the 521 with the Novar Anastigmat, it's a recent acquisition.

Thanks in advance !

When I was in my teens I used to take pictures with an old Ikonta 6x9 which had a Novar Anastigmat (4.5/10.5cm as far as I remember). Those image never were acceptable to me, let alone good (images taken at the same time with the 24x36mm Mamiya ZE and ZM turned out much better). I've never used said camera again, and these days, with all my experience, results certainly wold be better. But really good? I doubt it.

More recently (around 2010) I also have used a 6x9 Ikonta with the 3.5/10.5cm Tessar. I took landscape images on b/w film (Ilford Tmax 100), and compared them with images taken with the (then rather new) Sony A900. Even though the Ikonta images were taken using a tripod and a cable release, using f11 and f16, those images had nowhere nearly as much detail as those taken with the 24MP Sony A900.

That said, images taken with the Mamyia 645 and lenses such as the 2.8/45, the 1.9/80mm, the 4/210mm and the 5.6/300mm (using high res Kodak Technical Pan film plus red filter) had an extreme amount of detail.

If you really want to enjoy the fun of using a basically 100 years old camera, the Ikontas ceratinly aren't wrong. Don't expect too much when it comes to image quality, though.

A possible compromise between Ikonta type folders and a Mamiya 645? Maybe a 1960s TLR such as the Minolta Autocord or a Rolleicord/Rolleiflex would be an option? They have f3.5 Tessar type lenses, but certainly will give better results than the earler Ikontas.
