Found myself a little gem last week, and picked it up at the PO this morning: A Tokina 17mm f/3.5 SL ultra-wide. Although I have a 17-35 2.8 Nikkor AF-D, I was looking for something more compact in the ultra-wide range for when I want to travel light.
I put both the 17 and my 17-35 and took a pair of comparison shots in my back yard. I then resized them to 4000 pixels for viewing on PhotoBucket. Can anyone tell the difference? (To prevent cheating, I stripped the EXIF data.... ha ha!)

Hi!
Is there a way to see the 4000px images you mentioned in your post? In the small-ish display size I can currently see, there's no obvious difference between the two.

You might be seeing a bit of perspective difference between the two due to their lengths (49mm for the Tokina, 106 for the Nikkor). |

I prefer image #1, its clearer and more defined to my eyes.
I have no real clue as to which of the lenses that is but my guess is that #1 is the Nikkor?

I don't have a clue either as to which is which, but image #1 appears to be just a slight bit more defined. Good color and contrast with both, though. _________________ Michael

+1
The Tokina 3.5/17 is a wonderful lens, I've had three of them, two I passed on to friends, the third I am never parting with and I am always on the lookout for a cheap spare. _________________ I don't care who designed it, who made it or what country it comes from - I just enjoy using it! |

#1 is the Tokina. The top left tree is slightly closer to the frame's edge in 2, indicating a slightly longer lens. That said, I like the Tokina's color and contrast better and, to my eyes, the edge detail looks a bit sharper. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/user/hancockDavidM |

I feel like Image 2 seems a bit less contrasty, which actually helps the image - in Image 1, the sky is more blown out but the shadows seem darker, particularly - however, Image 1 is sharper and doesn't seem to have the flare that Image 2 does (which might have affected the contrast I'm noticing)

I prefer #2 for the colours, but it looks like modern coatings so probably the Nikkor. _________________ Casual attendance these days |

Img 2 has some flare in the tree, but I've never used either so I wouldn't know which is more prone to flare, but I'll guess #2 is the Tokina. _________________ A Manual Focus Junky...
