The final lens, the CZJ Biotar 2/58mm, however proved to be more tricky than the Pancolar 2/50mm and the CZJ Tessar 2.8/50mm: Its focusing was completely blocked (which, along with the special construction of the lens, made disassembling a bit challenging), most lens surfaces were either fogged or had some fungus, and the aperture blades not only were displaced, but damaged as well. Therefor it was 04:30 AM when I finally went to sleep ... But those repairs are the subject of another, forthcoming posting.
Having re-assembled and adjusted everything, I went on comparing those lenses with a more "modern" Minolta MC 1.4/50mm, the famous Zeiss Oberkochen Planar 1.4/50mm for Yashica/Contax, and the known "performer" Yashica ML 2.8/55mm Macro.
While I had compared a few German Tessar-type normal lenses before (with quite interesting and varying results, see corresponding thread at mflenses.com), I wasn't really prepared for the outcome of this test. Unlike with most earlier comparisons I used the 43 MP Sony A7RII here. Knowing that this sensor would be a challenge for any vintage lens I didn't expect too much from these 1950s lenses. But boy was I wrong! Compared to the later Minolta and Zeiss Oberkochen 1.4/50mm, at least the Biotar and the Pancolar had quite a bit a better corner resolution at f2 and f2.8. Looking at the borders (area from 12mm to 18mm from the image center), the Planar and the Rokkor had a better resolution and better contrast, though (especially at f2.8; results not shown here)
As many others have noticed before, both the Biotar 2/58mm as well as the Pancolar 2/50mm are excellent portrait lenses if used wide open and in b/w mode. While their overall contrast is low, the resolution is pretty high and relatively uniform over the entire FF image, including the extreme corners. There's little astigmatism, but (at least with the Pancolar) a distinct "noisy" bokeh as well as a swirling and "tunneling" effect. The latter can be useful, but this effect should be monitored closely when creating / framing an image. Some samples showing this effect will follow later on.
For time being here the test results, comparing 100% crops from the corner of JPGS out of the 43 MP Sony A7RII:

Of course the early 2.8/5cm Tessars (optical computation fro 1933) did not contain any high refractive lanthanum glass. However, Zeiss was aware of the fact this lens wasn't up to Zeiss standards (source: https://zeissikonveb.de/start/objektive/normalobjektive/tessar.html):

Zeiss did a series of test lenses in 1947 (all were 2.8/5cm Tessars); some of them containing new lanthanum and fluoride glass. Since these types of glass couldn't be pre-formed by moulding, manufacturing large amounts was considered impossible - and therefore rejected.
Finally, Harry Zöllner did create a 2.8/5cm Tessar with suitable performance, and without using lanthanum glass. It went into production in 1949 (the computation tested above). Given the restrictions at the time, it was certainly a good and useful lens. However, the double gauss type lenses (Planar / Biotar) clearly were the way to go.
Nevertheless the Russians (Ukrainians?) did improve the Tessar considerably by using high refractive lanthanum glass, as far as I know. Hopefully someone with greater knowlegde can add some information here ...
Nikon did the same with their 2.8/45mm Nikkor in the 1960s:

Absolutely. At about 2/3 distance from the center, the Minolta (as well as the Zeiss Planar) clearly outperforms the Pancolar / Biotar.

The Domiplan is a Triplet, not a Tessar type. As a student I bought a Praktica camera with a Domiplan 50mm 2.8 early 1968. The worst SLR lens I ever had (in my memory). Sure Tessar types can not compete with good double gauss lenses or even Xenotar types on resolution, especially not towards the edges, but there are variations in image quality among theTessar type lenses.
In non SLR lenses I have a nice Color Skopar 50mm 2.8 of a Vito BL. Some say the 3.5 is better. A Kodak Anastigmat Special or Anastar if not the Ektar grade of that Tessar type might surprise you. Kodak was early and not afraid to use Thorium or Lanthanum, even in its consumer lenses.

Newer ones can be really good on film with edge to edge sharpness. But I feel the same about using them on digital and like triples more for their interesting bokeh. |

Center resolution / contrast on a coated post-WWII CZJ Tessar 2.8/50mm is quite good, but drops off pretty soon in the field:

Of course the original early f6.3 and f4.5 Tessars were meant to be used on large format or 6x9 cameras, usually stopped down to f11 at least. That said: Even the Tessar 3.5/105mm, used with modern 6x9cm film at f11 or f16, cannot provide the detail we are used to from a 24MP FF sensor and a decent 1.4/50mm @ f11 ... which of course is a problem of the film, not the Tessar in itself. It simply didn't make sense to further improve the Tessars back then ...

9) Braun Reflex-Ultralit 2.8/50mm (or is that one a triplet??)
10) Industar 2.8/55mm

I know the Konica AR as well as the Pentax are surprisingly good - no wonder as the Takumar is using thorium glass as well as being only f4, and the Konica has a reduced angle of view (55mm insetad of 50mm) as well as f3.5 and (probably) lanthanum glass ...

That Canon I have used as my standard, macro and enlarging lens in the 1970-1980's. In hindsight not so wise, a secondhand Canon FD 1.8 or 1.4 would have been way better. The Elmar 50mm 3.5 before that was at the same level, used on a IIIf. Lens from the 1950's.
Neither was I impressed by an Industar 61 50mm 2.8 on the A7RII some years ago. The Color Skopar 50mm 2.8 of the Vito BL was better on the A7RII. I guess that is the 1949 computation by Tronnier.
On larger film formats I liked the Ysarex 127mm of the Polaroid Pathfinder, the similar Yashinon 127mm rendered almost the same. Packfilm rebuild for B&W negatives of the 665 type.
Both the Color Skopar 105mm 3.5 on the Bessa (88×56mm frame) and the Kodak Anastigmat Special 101mm 4.5 on a Monitor 620 gave nice images.
My best folder and 'Tessar' lens: the Iskra with the Industar 58 75mm 3.5.
If compared to double gauss types with a good central resolution but lousy edges the'Tessar' type might have a chance. So more portrait type lenses. The rendering being a first goal. The Ysarex showed that it is possible.
In search for a Yashinon Xenotar type like used on the Yashica 35 fixed lens rangefinder I bought some 'kaput' Yashica 35 YK, YL, Minister D, cameras. All 'Tessar' 45mm 2.8 types though, despite other info on the web. The Minister III has also a 'Tessar' type. I converted the 3 lenses to Sony FE mount, good helicoids. The YK and YL Yashinons have apertures with many blades and a nice exterior. But no Thorium or Lanthanum element I think and the Color Skopar still with a better IQ in my opinion.

I assumed reversed 'Elmar' type, you came to the same conclusion.
The Miranda probably a 'Tessar' type. Kamerastore thinks so andcthey are pros IMHO. Another message mentions a 5 element type. That usually is either Biometar-Xenotar-Unilite type, straight or reversed (Ultragon in a sense) or Super-Xenar (these days called Sonnar in the WA versions). Rear side reflection of the S-X is Tessar identical, front has 6 clear reflections. Xenotar has 4 clear reflections and no faint one at the rear, if not the reversed type. _________________ Met vriendelijke groet, Ernst

I have the earler 17 blade version as well - a black beauty that came with a pretty battered Miranda Sensomat II. Luckily that lens is in a near-perfect state, and I did have to clean neither the lens surfaces nor the aperture ...
Yesterday, when I was in town, I took a few snapshots with the (re-built) Biotar shown in the first posting, using the 43 MP FF Sony A7RII. The Biotar is pretty sensitive to backlight, so a good hood or - even better - shadowing the front lens with one's hands often increases the contrast distinctively.
First a few color images - this on was taken through the glass of a showcase, handheld at f8 with 1 s exposure. Not completely sharp on the original image (mainly due to the glass), but certainly good enough to publish in large size book:

At MFD and wide open - resolution decreases, and some LoCAs are visible, as well as traces of a swirly bokeh (due to the relatively small front lens):
100% crop from the image above - LoCAs are clearly visible, and resolution isn't perfect. But hey, it's a computation from 89 years ago (!!), used at MFD and wide open on a 43 MP sensor ...
Lateral CAs are extremely well corrected. Here's first the entire image, then the 100% crop from the extreme corner. Image taken at f8.
Distortion is visible in some cases such as these, but certainly not as bad as with many Japanese 1.4/50mm lenses from the 1970s (such as the Canon FD, for example):
While the light certainly was pretty bad / low contrast / "boring", those images nevertheless give a certain impression about the qualities of the CZJ Biotar 2/58mm. Finally here's an image at full resolution, taken at f8 in the b/w mode and directly out of the Sony A7RII. The resolution, even in the corners, is baffling. First the entire image:

While old German lenses quite often have some issues with contrast (low contrast due to slight fogging), a well cleaned Biotar should not have such issues. Very pleasing rendering of shadows and highlights indeed (at f8, again):

As before: nothing wrong with the corners (100% crop from near the corner) ...
Some pretty harsh lighht again (mainly backlight), and the cleaned lens is handling it well. Taken at f8, again:

And here from the lower corner! At f2 the corners have a surprising amount of detail (as we have seen in my test at the beginnig of th thread), but really low contrast - and very well controlled CAs as well:
At f5.6 the image has cleaned up reasonably well - such an image would be perfectly suitable to print in a large format (24 x 32 cm) book. Stopping down to f8 or f11 would improve the image slightly, again (not shown here):

So what's my verdict after using the CLA'd Carl Zeiss Jena Biotar 2/58mm a) for landscapes in low-contrast light, b) portraits in low contrast light, and c) cityscapes & indoor in high contrast light?
Well, the lens is much better than I had expected! Unlike the common Japanese 1.4/50mm lenses from the 1970s - early 1990s, the Biotar is more versatile:
At f2: Very well suited for low contrast, "smooth" portraits (especially b/w vintage look!). Lots of detail even in the corners (much more than the common f1.4 lens mentioned above), and just the right amount of vignetting. Not recommended for landscapes, though ...
At f4 - f5.6: pretty well suited for indoor shooting such as churches, museums and the like - medium contrast, good (but not excellent) detail in the corners.
At f8 - f11: perfect for landscapes even on 50 MP FF sensors. No lateral CAs (unlike with the 1.4/50m lenses mentioned above), looks to me like an image from a recent "high res" normal lens such as the Sony FE GM 1.4/50mm ...Microcontrast may be a tad lower, but that's certainly not a problem (and occasionally even a feature).
So it was really worth spending 3-4 hours on diassembling, cleaning, repairing and re-assebmling this lens . _________________ www.artaphot.ch |
