Hello everyone!

I am planning to do small-scale comparison of my fifties (all M42 mount, East-German). I know that it sounds a bit boring, but I am really interested in the real world differences. What type of test shots would be interesting? Atm I can do the tests with my Nex-5N, or with a Canon 5D; unfortunately 3 lenses won't reach infinity properly on the latter. (Pancolar, Pentacon 50mm, Meyer 58mm)

I was thinking about the following scenes:

-Far away landscape. (Maybe using 5m hyperfocal distance on the 5D to avoid mirror issues. I expect only slight difference in corner performance as the aperture would be F11. But still a good test, because corner performance matters in landscape shots.)
-Static subject shot to test the bokeh and wide open performance. (And maybe at f2.8 to give a chance to the Tessar.)
-Real-world flare resistance test. (Important, if you shoot sunsets...)

Do you have more ideas? Btw I don't want to do a long and number-oriented article, just an interesting one. Cool

Put into a closer subject too , most lens excellent in closer distance. Crop camera can hide corner weakness.

For the real world flare resistance, I would suggest a night shot with a close street light on the edge of the frame.

Thanks for the suggestion! I prefer the FF camera, because I want to shoot some B&W film as well. I really like the Tessar for example, it is is so small! It would be perfect to minimize the size of the kit. But does it perform well? This is 1 of the interesting questions for me.

Another question: should I shoot raw and equalize exposure, or is it enough to shoot jpeg?

This is what I thought as well. I'll try to find a nice promenade. Smile

Figure out why you are testing, ie what you want to get out of it first, then do the tests. Otherwise you are wasting your time.

Shows sharpness, colors, bokeh, CAs, flaring and is very fast&easy
