Thanks for doing this work. I'm watching with great interest as I'm looking at the wishlist of lenses to add to my Contax RX. Obviously I'm pretty limited by choice of lens mount (CaMiNik are out of the question) but it's great to see why I should not get a Yashica ML!

That 28-85 has definitely made it to the shortlist reading through all your results.

They are available at pretty reasonable prices right now, and so are the CY 4/80-200mm lenses (the latter with excellent corner performance even wide open).

That said, Tamron Adaptall-2 lenses might be a viable option too, but personally I would prefer the Zeiss stuff for a camera such as the RX.

Well a Zeiss 28-85 is on its way to me from Japan.
I knew that would happen Smile

Next will be an 80-200......

I guess you'll be quite happy with the 28-85mm, knowing now its weak points. It's well built, and feels solid while allowing for smooth operation. Sure, the Zeiss ZA 2.8/24-70mm is faster and has much better corner performance, but when it comes to clear images and good contrast wide open, the much older manual focusing Zeiss CY 28-85mm is almost as good (and visibly better than all the other 28-85mm lenses tested above). I hope you really enjoy it, especially sinceyou have an appropriate SLR Wink

The CY Vario Sonnar 4/80-200mm has no problems with corner performance at all, even wide open. Only drawback (compared to modern lenses) are the lateral CAs which are on par with other conteporary "upper class" lenses such as the Canon nFD 4/80-200mm, the Minolta 4/70-210mm, the Nikkor AiS 4/80-200mm and the Leica R 4/70-210mm.

Stephan, we have to assume that your comparation is done? I thought that some further informations were still to come, but maybe I didn't understand

I've been doing quite some more comparisons with those lenses (e. g. contrast or flares), but as usual I have to do the same tests more than once to get images suitable for publishing - usually because the light is changing while comparing the lenses. so yes, I have gained additional insights, but not published yet. And weather is petty abysmal here in central Switzerand when it comes to testing gear ... often just low visibility or - if occasionally there some sun - a pretty hazy air.

That said, the artaphot website has been attacked repeatedly this year, and I'm preparing to completely re-new the site, using up-to-date publihing tools (and security). That means not so much time for careful testing and preparing the results accordingly ...

SORRY !!
