What would you say about Yashica FX-D?
http://camera-wiki.org/wiki/Yashica_FX-D
Vertical metal shutter + a fancy AV-AE.

I know it is not m42.

Well I assume the camera is OK (like my FR-1) but can tell you it will take M42 lenses with an adapter (bit fiddly compared to Canon) and of course Tamron but you are more limited in that you'll have to buy more expensive ML (better than DSB) lenses or very expensive Contax lenses.

Some Chinon models are M42 with LR44 batteries. These are rugged cameras with metal-blade shutters.
The CM-1 and CE-3 are 2 examples but I believe there are other models as well.

The Fujica ST-801 (battery 4LR44), is what gives me a solid feel than other camera bodies I have. The Praktica MTL50 (4LR44 battery) is better than MTL5B (LR44 battery) your lightmeter is best seen in low-light scenes.

Regards.

Sorry for the translation: I don't speak english.

The shutter is nearly as smooth as my Minolta XD7, and 100% more civilized that my Zenits and Practika's. Actually the Practika's are worse than the Zenits, the mirror slap is just dreadful. And Practika's are know to jam solid, I've got a mint MTL5 that has a jammed shutter, it's a shame because it's a good camera - on a tripod. Wink

The problem is your prakticas are too new. Wink

The Nova and earlier series have no mirror slap at all. They don't use a foam bumper for the mirror, but a flap of fabric so the motion of the mirror physically cannot "slap" at the end of its travel. It just rubs against the flap and returns. Before Praktica adopted the instant return mirror you could even trigger the mirror separately from the shutter to cut down on camera shake.

One of tricks you can do with the older prakticas is set one loose in the palm of your hand, then trigger the shutter with a cable release. There's no perceptible shutter slap, but you will feel the following curtain close. Very Happy

I'm kind of shocked by the mirror slap in some of my other old SLRs, although the Exa is by far the worst because the mirror being part of the shutter has so much mass, presumably.

Zeiss ikon 701 or Icarex in m42 version. Mamiya 1000 DTL, Fujica 801 and 901. Alpa 10D with m42 adapter. Chinons memotron series.

Cosina. All from the Hi-Lite series.
They need mercury, but it is the tiny 675 and you can replace these by a Zn-air or simply put an LR-44 in it and don't use reversal film.
