from these samples the 24-48 doesn't thrill me too much. How's it with landscape/architecture?

Don't know on my crop body doesn't look too cool any wide angle lens, based on this performance I think this lens will be a good performer on full frame (film or 5D)

I like it too, if you see eye, this lens has excellent performance. I don't English name of this bird, sorry.

The bird is IMO the Laughing Kingfisher, the Kookaburra. AFAIK the largest bird of the kingfiher family.
