really nice graham! how sharp is that, and its not an expensive lens at all, is it? btw i really like the street scene.

i just today received the sp 28-80mm (i already had the non sp 28-70mm) and i ran out for a few quick shots on a very dark grey day and i was really surprised by the sharpness as well, and i got the lens for under $30usd!!!

look forward to more shots with the 24.

Thanks Tony Smile This lens is not particularly common...I got mine for £55.00 but the next one went for £84.00 in the UK! There are two on ebay UK right now, which is rare Shocked

It retains lots of detail which is impressive for a lens this wide. The SP 28-80 is also excellent and I'm sure you'll get some cracking shots with it!

As an owner of the Vivitar S1 24-48mm f/3.8, I can't help but be curious as to how these two lenses compare. If you have an S1 24-48mm handy, I'd be interested in seeing the comparison. If you don't, it occurs to me that we could still get the job done. We could compare shots taken of 10 euro notes (one of which I happen to own). I'm assuming that, even though the UK has not converted to the euro, it's probably still pretty common over there -- kinda like Canadian money is with the border states in the US. Unfortunately, my S1 24-48mm is in Canon FD mount, but I have an FD-EOS adapter, which I have determined to my satisfaction that does not significantly affect sharpness. It just introduces a lot of flare when the lens is wide open in some, but not all, situations.

I also own a Tamron 24-70mm Aspherical AF lens for EOS, which I bought new about 15 years ago. I'd be curious how it compares with the SP 24-48 at equivalent focal lengths. My experiences with the AF 24-70 is that it's actually a very good performer.

The nicest thing about your Tamron, other than the fact that it appears to deliver photos with excellent sharpness, color, and contrast, is the simple fact that it's an Adaptall lens. And even though it's technically a variable aperture lens, the variation from f/3.5 to f/3.8 is such a small amount that functionally it can be considered a constant aperture zoom lens. I've owned (and presently own) allegedly constant aperture zoom lenses that had and have more variation than this in aperture value when zooming from one extreme in focal length to another -- quite a bit more, in fact.

If you're interested in doing long-distance comparison tests, let me know. But in my case it will probably have to wait another week or so, since my Canon DSLR is undergoing warranty service.

Michael

Just as soon as I can locate a 10 euro note, I will let you know Smile The images above were resized from RAW but had a few tweaks because of the non-hood issue, so I need to do some more tests anyway.

It would certainly be an interesting test, and I'd like to test some of the other 24mm lenses I have hanging around too (Vivitar 24/2.8 - Tokina version, Hoya HMC 24/2.8, Hanimex 24/2.Cool.

Thanks

Graham

Yes, it would be quite interesting to see how your 24-48 fares when compared to your 24mm primes. This is something I've been meaning to do as well since I have a Tamron 24/2.5 and a Nikkor 24/2.8. In any case, my testing will have to wait until my Canon DSLR is returned from being serviced.

Might be interesting to compare my Viv S-1 24-48, Panagor 24 f/2.5 and Kiron 24 f/2 glass...
