I like this zoom lens very much, because it's very easy to use, bright and quite sharp.
... but 3 weeks old kittens move a lot.
1- what's up, doc ?
2- Take that, rascat !
3- What's going on around here ?
4- Come on !
5- Jump on him, or not ? That's the question.

It's a good lens - I have one and think highly of it. Kittens can be very hard to photograph with long lenses so keep trying ! Happily "digital film" costs so little ... _________________ Stephen

Well I like Tamrons as well, and have 80-210/03a and 70-210/46a. Also accumulated Canon 70-210, Kiron 80-200 f4 and Canon 200mm f4 prime.
Anyway I decided to do tests to find what's lens to carry around that gave best results at 200mm (and other settings), and was amazed the Kiron came out on top for sharpness and yet the Canon prime is in mint condition.........erm
If I see a Hexanon 80-200mm or SP Tamron going cheap, we'll see if it can knock the Kiron off it's perch. |

About your Canon prime, is it an AF lens ? and an EF one ?
Do you have some pictures of the Kiron and some samples taken with it ?
@ scsambrook, yes digital film is cheap.

Canon FD
and
Well the 200mm shots are boring, but here are some shot's (not macro) comparing Kiron 80-200mm, Tamron SP 35-80, Tamron 35-70mm, and Tamron 80-210. I've compared the original 19-30mb files and looking at the bits in focus and there is not much difference in a Tamron SP and the Kiron...Well there ya go, I might have an excellent specimen of a Kiron and poor Tamron SP and poor Canon 200mm prime.
Erm just noticed clicking on link doesn't properly view the pics, best copy and paste link

Thanks, dear old sword.
This Kyron seems really good.
I'm astonished by the Tamron 80-210 which lokks very poor in comparison.
To compare, here is a rose shot taken with mine this afternoon at 210mm :

Well the Kiron 80-200mm f4 is supposed to be slighly inferior to the f4.5 version erm, and I'm not knocking the Tamrons as my test was for my lenses and just wanted to know what's the best zoom (of what I have) should I carry around.......I also wanted to know out of four zooms (one is a Tokina) that can reach 200mm/210mm, was there any point carrying a Canon 200mm f4 prime around. _________________ Canon A1, AV1, T70 & T90, EOS 300 and EOS300v, Chinon CE and CP-7M. Hang on, be careful about which Tamron 80-210 you mean.
The 03A is not top quality IQ but the newer version 103A is very good indeed, almost up to the 19AH SP version (and a lot easier to handle). You can identify the 03A and 103A very easily - the 03A has a sliding fitted lens hood, but the hood for the 103A is separate, bayonet fitting. _________________ Peter - Moderator |

Confirmed, but with a caveat or two:
First, I'm respectful those shooting with film surely will choose the 103A for its seriously superior off-axis resolution.
I don't shoot with film any longer. And the better on-axis resolution of the older 03A works for me when shooting with my digital cameras. I also like the built-in hood of the 03A.
I've owned a 103A lens for a while. Today just brought in a 03A. It's a very nice lens. I'm happy, and fortunate, to have one of each. These lenses are definitely different, one from the other. There is, I think, justification to have one of each in your collection. |
