The Robot cameras were used for school photos and in Sears (or was it JC Penny? -- probably both) in-store portrait studios. Medium frame iirc...

I would suspect that it‘s something called a "Recording Camera" or "Registrierkamera" in German. It‘s a camera built to capture certain processes automatically, either in certain intervals or on particular sensor-detections.
