Just need some clarification around step up or step down rings, as looking on e bay is rather confusing. I am looking for an adapter ring to mount and m42 lens onto and m39 adapter to X mount, so is it step down from the lens i.e. m42 to m39 or step up from the camera body m39 to m42, does this make sense, thanks. E bay postings seem to be a bit contradictory.

Step up/ down rings are the term used for filter rings. Do you want to hook an m42 lens on top of an m39 adapter atteched to X-mount?!? Rolling Eyes

I think you just need an adapter from camera body to lens that you want to adapt. I just bought an M42 - FX and M39-FX (Fuji mount) adapters, as Lars has mentioned a step up or down ring is something different.

With filters having the female thread larger than the male thread is a step up.

I have an adapter ring to convert M42 mounts to M39 which work fine. Going the other way however increases the distance the lens is from the camera restricting your focus if the two lenses have the same rear flange distance. Some (rangefinder) M39 lenses have considerably shorter rear focal distances than M42, others are the same & others (enlarger lenses) are all over the place.

Unless it's being used for macro getting the right thickness of adapter behind a lens is critical.
