Hello,
I just received an old Steinheil München Culminar 4.5/135 VL.
I think it is in Exakta mount but I'm not sure.
Could you confirm this ?

Inner diameter is 32mm, intermediate is 39mm.

Thank you in advance. Smile

Yes, I would say exakta.

Thank you very much Smile

Now I have to get the Exakta adapter to Eos... Confused
There is this kind :

or these :

http://cgi.ebay.fr/Exakta-Topcon-Lens-to-Canon-eos-Adapter-/370386834218?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item563cc6932a

Which would fit a 5D MkII at best ?

Be aware that I had a problem with the exakta adapter I got and my 5D mk1.

Other people have had more success by removing the tiny exakta lock screw, gluing an M39-M42 adapter ring around the outside of the bayonet and then mounting that on an M42-EOS adapter. I think infinity focus is possible, but not likely, using this method.

Thank you Martin.
Here are 2 lateral shots from the same side showing 2 screws (what you call lock screws ?).

Relax, you can adapt that lens to your EOS very simply, as I did with my Meyer Primotar 3.5/135.

The Exacta mount is small enough that an M42-EOS adapter fits over it, just buy a M42-EOS adapter (I used a cheap 2.49 one from Big Is) and place it over the exakta mount then glue it in place, I used epoxy.

Works perfectly, infinity is where it should be, lens isn't the sharpest but has great bokeh.

Cool, Ian. Wink
I tried it by mounting a M42 ring and keeping the lens tight against it.
No problem with infinity.
It was very dusty and I just cleaned the external lenses surfaces. I shall dismount them later to clean them because there are spots of humidity between them.

I think I'll glue it on the M42 to Eos adapter I used to try it.
No problem with the mirror on the 5D MkII.
Some samples :
on 400D (I didn't unscrew a lock screw which let some light pass. So I added contrast.

on 5D². Lock screw unscrewed so that the lens handheld stick closer to the adapter.

Tres Bien Mon Ami!

Looks a bit sharper than my Primotar, looks like a good lens, nice work!

Thank you Ian for giving me this nice tip.
I'll clean the glasses better and glue the mount on the adapter. Very Happy

17£ for this lens, I'm happy with it (delivery cost more...).
This is a Steinheil München !
16 blades diaphragm.

Even after cleaning I don't think it will raise to the level of the Steinheil München 2.8/135mm Tele Quinar, which is a handsome lens and a wonderful performer.

EDIT :
I cleaned it...
Very easy to access and service.

Low light, wide open at f:4.5, iso 1600
It is a performer too :

For that price you did very well, it is a good lens, clearly.

Enjoy your new toy!

Thank you Martyn.
I like very much when things happen this way.
Old lens with a great name on sale with a bad description and appearance (really full of dust).
Mass Seller having good quotations.
Low starting price.
Bidding the initial price a few hours before the end, with a max bid not too high.
Winning the auction just 1 pound over the minimum bid.
Receiving very fast (I would have wait a bit for less delivery costs, royal mail is expensive).
Discovering the new toy and remove dust easily.
No need to relub, anything functioning smoothly.
Managing to open it easily.
Cleaning glasses and remove all traces.
Remounting it.
Installing on the camera and shoot some trials.
Uploading samples on the computer.
Discovering they are very good.
Satisfaction guaranteed Very Happy

Adapting Exakta mounts to my Pentax cameras, I go a little further.

1) Remove (and save!) the index screw from the lens base.
2) Glue a cheap M39-M42 adapter ring around the Exakta bayonet.
3) For infinity focus, grind about 0.6mm from an M42-PK adapter.
4) Thread the ground-down M42-PK onto the M39-M42 ring.

The glue can be dissolved and the screw replaced to return the lens to usability on an Exakta camera. But the important part is putting the M39-M42 adapter around the bayonet. It fits neatly and holds strongly, a snug fit. Just gluing an M42-EOS or whatever adapter to the base is a bit more risky. Also, the extra thread gives more play for adjusting infinity focus for your Canon.

Thank you Riorico.

In 2) and 3), do you mean M42/Eos instead M42/Pk ?
What kind of glue do you use ?
Smile

I wrote what I meant. I described how I convert for PK mounts. I use the M39-M42 ring to give the M42-bayonet adapter a better grip on the lens. I have no experience with M42-EOS adapters; you *might* need to grind some material from such an adapter, to reach infinity focus. Or you might be able to use my modification and then add a PK-EOS adapter, but I have not tried that -- I have no EOS camera to play with!

How to grind the adapter: The goal is to remove about 0.6mm from the side of the adapter that faces the lens, NOT the camera side. Tape a piece of coarse sandpaper to a very flat and hard surface, like a smooth ceramic tile. Place the adapter on the sandpaper. Press a piece of soft wood (like balsa or white pine) or rubber (like a large eraser) onto the adapter. Press down on that and swirl the adapter on the sandpaper to remove the metal. Occasionally test the adapter on the lens and camera, to see it you can reach infinity focus yet.

The glue I use is common contact cement. At first I used paper glue but it did not hold well. Contact cement can be dissolved with lacquer thinner if you wish to restore the lens for Exakta use. After gluing the M39-M42 adapter to the lens, wait 24 hours or more for it to dry firmly, before threading anything onto it. Good luck!

Understood.
Thanks a lot for the precise explanations. Smile
