I am impressed by the clean results for high ISO but the lens doesn't appeal to me at all, far too much distortion and falloff of illumination, judging by those samples. I think I'd rather chose a less extreme wideangle and have less distortion.

Look at the second pic, the subject's face looks weird due to distortion, as does the guy behind him, it's like a fairground hall of mirrors effect. Third pic, look at the guy in the white shirt on the right hand side, how his face is smeared and pulled horizontally.

Definitely not for me, sorry to say, and I'm a wide angle lover.

I am impressed how well the Sony sensor handles this ultra wide lens.
As you know, Leica M8 and M9 had serious issues with corners of wide lenses.

A 12mm would not be my all-around lens, but the results are impressive.

again, whether positive or negative, i preach caution in drawing hard conclusions from preliminary results before the final version of the camera is publicly available. i do think sonys publicly stated attention to making the 7R compatible with legacy glass, and the advent of the cv adspter, bode very well and are cause for optimism. but until the final version is out and thoroughly vetted, we should take all posted 'results' with a huge grain of salt.

Sometimes you want a 12mm FoV and that lens is probably your only chance (unless you use the Sigma 12-24).

this looks just perfect - both the lens and the camera ...

I can't see any problem with Heliar 12 f5.6 regarding distortion -
the problem is down to the photographer and the way how she/he handled the composition

superb combo - finally, I can see now the best digital body for the Heliar at the moment

By the way - there is a small sings of magenta cast towards the corners - but I believe it can be eliminated in without a loss..

LOL, I was the first to suggest not getting too enthusiastic until the camera has been out a while and thoroughly trialled, and I got roundly attacked for it.

The issue here is not who said what first. The issue is what words people use to express their opinion, and how other people intrepret these words. Besides, when You, Ian, said it, the camera was not even announced, if I remember correctly.

The only reason I posted the link to "alternative" results is because, when it comes to newly announced cameras, some people "find" the best examples to support their hopes, and some people find the "worst" ones to upset others, rarely objectively comparing one to each other, and often forgetting that these cameras are not final, and that some lenses were never designed with these cameras in mind.

Please note that English is not my first language.

I have coveted the cv 12 for 3 years or so, thus I'm familiar with the lens.

First: this lens works well on the M9, with very mild colorshift. It's the cv15 that shifts alot. Corners and edges are quite good on both with the M9.

The big problem is the issue of smearing, which can't be fixed, vs color shift which can be addressed PP. Hence both can produce spectacular images on the M9. Superior to the M240, from what I hear, anyway.

The image link from the OP is hardly definitive--in fact it's a pretty lame shot to judge a landscape lens---but it's better than most expected.

I'll be surprised and very happy if, on the A7r, the deep corners on either the 12 or 15 are free from any smear and close to the M9. Both of these lenses are fantastic on film.

There are 2 versions of the lens, same formula but outwardly very different, and one LTM, one M.

As everyone knows, deep corners are an issue only one some shots, like landscapes, and architecture. That's pretty important, but it's not everything.

You guys know I'm sure this is not a cheap lens. 450 is about as cheap as you will ever find a good one---and that's rare.

How effective it truly is on the A7r remains to be see, as many point out. You can't tell from samples so far.

Time will tell though, once the cameras have been out a while and plenty of folks have used them with different lenses in different situations, then we can draw some conclusions. Smile

Bogolisk, maybe you aren't familiar with sarcasm, it's a form of humour, and I was being sarcastic i.e. trying to be humourous, whereas you just trolled and insulted me, I notice you didn't also quote your insults, just my attempt at humour. Do I see a pattern here? Seems like a personal vendetta, we're even quoting old threads out of context now. The very definition of trolling.

Ian can be blunt at times, there's no denying that, but he writes as he feels. This may not appeal to everyone. But really, if you don't like someones opinions then take them for what they are, opinions. You can in fact opt to ignore.

That "insult" you quoted, what exactly is so insulting about it? The fact that a penis was mentioned? It happens to be true, my penis won't grow any longer or thicker even if I bought both the A7 and the A7r. And the same could be said about every male here (and the ladies here too). If getting a new camera would do the trick, I would be first in line.

To attack someone with the excuse that he "insulted the whole community" when all he really did was express his caution regarding raving about a new product (even if it was written in a sarcastic tone) is not very nice at all. Something that we could well do without on this forum. All it leads to is a lot of OT, like this post of mine.
