Some questions about the Techart LM EA7 AF adapter

Hi Everyone:

I finally used my Techart LM EA7 adapter on the Sony A7r3 and Zeiss Biotar 75mm.

I have a couple of questions I hope you can answer.

1. The Techart LM EA7 only focuses in the center of the frame. I tried moving the focus box 2/3 way up but it still focused only on center. This is a problem for portraits. I will have to keep cropping them. Does the newer Techart LM EA9 offer this capability for focus to move outside of center?

2. What auto-focus settings do you find work best?

3. Should I get the Techart LM EA9? What practical improvement can I expect.

Thank you,

-Charles

Hi Charles, nice to see you here again!

The LM-EA9 AF is better than LM-EA7 in my experience. The LM-EA9 supports Eye & Face AF. I'm not sure if the A7R3 has those features.

Thanks! Interesting table. Just took the EA7 for a spin the first time. The focusing was awful except when the eyes of the subject were in the middle of the frame. The circle for best focus was very small wide open. My issue now is that I have to be at least five feet from the subject but I would like to get closer.

You might get closer by pre-focusing using the lens focus ring to almost close enough before using shutter half-press to activate the AF to achieve exact focus.

Thanks, I'll try that. Unfortunately my focus ring seems to freeze or lock for some reason. I wonder why?

All in all, the range of distance from the subject to achieve good focus seems to be very limited with this adapter.

The adapter can extend the lens only 4.5mm. On Phillip Reeve's page at https://phillipreeve.net/blog/review-techart-lm-ea9-leica-m-to-sony-e-autofocus-adapter/#What_lenses_the_LM-EA9_works_best_with is a chart showing minimum focus distance for different focal lengths with lens set at infinity. For 75mm the minimum focus distance is 1.37 meters, which is why you can't get as close as you want. And is why the AF doesn't work so well, or at all if you are closer. I think the pre-focus technique will work for you. I have used the same technique with up to 500mm lens. In fact I first heard of the technique from our member Calvin Lee (Calvin83).

This is an excellent suggestion. Thank you!!
