I've been always curious to know if the larger Som Berthiot coming from the 16mm projection family gives crisper image and a large enough image circle for APS-C, as compared to its smaller relatives, such as jolly swirlers 1.7/50 and 1.5/65 Cinor. So comes the turn of 1.7/80 Cinor, quite a massive lens. It has some optical defects of the front glass, such as damaged coating and light lateral haze. And this may affect the IQ, especially in respect to the stray light. So the first quick results are only valid for this particular copy. Even though, there is a recognizable "gloom and glow" tint common with the smaller 65mm Cinor already mentioned.

The images are taken with Sony Nex, then adjusted for exposure and contrast, the last two desaturated. The same subject is taken from various points thus leaving the light to play and reveal the glowy, almost double transparent edges.

I'd still say "gloom". The glow is always here, but in the same time shades are rendered in a "noir" style.

As mentioned, the lens has an optical fault which leads to contrast issues, but in general IQ it stands in line with its shorter sibling. Here are some more samples, exposure and contrast boosted.
