Well i picked up in Contax Yashica a nice Sigma 24mm F2.8 from a boot sale at the weekend and decided a few snaps at lunchtime where in order yesterday just having time to upload now a rather nice wide angle lens very close focusing and has nice smooth bokeh

Dear Eddieitman,
The Sigma 24mm f2.8 is an uncommonly fine lens and your pictures prove it. I have owned the manual versions but currently use the later Super-wide ll autofocus versions on Pentax.
I don't know if they are exactly the same optically as yours. I like them so much I have 2.
I have read that they are identical to an old Leitz design but don't believe everything I read about lenses on the internet. It only seems possible because the lens does have a Leica-like rendering.

This extremely versatile lens excels when shooting close-ups. 1:4 macro I think. Classic lens. Nice images!

Thanks Jeff, I did think that it was a lot nicer at close range and seems to render nice images, I may do a 24mm shootout I think i have 3 24mm now

Looks like excellent lens. How do you compare it with Miranda 24mm Macro F2.8 ?

Iaza, I think that the Miranda had more vivid colours, and that the edges seemed a bit sharper, that miranda was a fine lens on this Sigma the edges do look a bit smudged in the corners on wide shots.

On top of my head, I remember besides this Sigma and the Miranda 24/2.8, there's an Ensinor 24/2.8 that also has macro/close focus capability. I wonder how they compare and whether they are in some way related.

Distortion full frame on film, stopped down at f5.6

Sigma 24mm f2.8 superwide II stopped down to f5.6.

Jeff - I also have two of them, one in Pentax AF and the other in Canon EOS (film camera) AF. From memory, the AF versions are optically the same as the MF ones. My Pentax one mis-focuses VERY slightly at ranges under about 30cm, although it's only apparent when used at f2.8 or f4. I don't see much to moan about even on film where you get 'more edge' - and who actually peers into the corners anyway when looking at prints?

They are indeed good lenses but you're absolutely right to be suspicious about claims that it's an old Leitz design. According to Erwin Puts, who has written extensively having had access to the factory records, the 24mm Elmarit-R in its first version was a Minolta optical design, but made in Germany using German glass in a dedicated Leica mount. If the Minolta lens is "better" than the Sigma, it should be a pretty nice one.
