Removing paint

I bought a third party metal lens hood on eBay. When it arrived it had the worst paint job ever. The paint was sticky and smelly and really disgusting. I want to remove the old paint and re-paint it. By working my way through every chemical in the house I found that ammonia was effective at dissolving the paint and I managed to remove most of the paint.

But I still have a few black "shadows" left on the metal. The ammonia does not seem to do anything to dissolve the paint. Do I have any other options than using sand paper to remove the last paint?

Caustic soda is not a good idea if the hood is made of aluminium. It will dissolve.

Can you use a buffing wheel to rub it off? Or how about a hot air paint stripper?

A muslin buffing wheel and some buffing compound will work or get rubbing compound used on auto finishes. Rub the rubbing compound on by hand. Takes a little elbow grease but it will remove the remaining residue. Light sand it then prime and light sand, then spray paint it with Krylon brand flat black. It will look factory then...Or I should say made in a GOOD factory. YOURS!! Laughing Laughing
