The Olympic rain forests are intrinsically very difficult to ascertain any
kind of decent composition. The detail in the landscape is an overlaod
on the brain, and it becomes (for me) a true challenge of where the hell
to point the camera! Mad

I decided that instead of trying to simplify, an almost impossible task,
that I would just go ahead and compose directly onto the "jungle" and
let things fall where they may.

This terrain was very broad and flat, with an area of several square
kilometers, so I used compass bearings to keep in touch with where
the nearest trail was. That trail would take me back to my car.

THE LAST IMAGE TOTALLY LOST SHARPNESS WHEN I UPLOADED Sad

Traveling North-Northeast
Compass Bearing 93 East

Log that Marked my Position
I Traveled About 35 Minutes on the NNE Heading and Found My Orientation Log

Found the Old Trail - Car About an Hour Away

I really like the first! The shapes and forms are amazing. The color is so rich and vibrant. The real density of the jungle comes through there. Very nice!

Thanks all you guys. I do love the rain forest. It's been a lifetime of
visitation, and it always feels like an old friend.

I like it when I can see the contrast of green from a Sword Fern against
the emerald green of the forest. It brings a smile every time. I must look
pretty stupid just smiling constantly as I walk through the forests. Laughing

Speaking of walking through the forest - it is a slow process because I try
to step carefully. Whenever possible I just wear tennis shoes.
But then, you have to remember that the elk herds trample the
foliage until it's mud, and then it springs back to life again.
So, I guess I shouldn't feel too bad.

Strange. I am unable to see photo #2. I like first photo a lot.

Very vibrant, but like Attila says, I am missing the sharpness. It could be the work's monitor though.

This Camera suits you very well Laurence !

Very beautiful photos with a particuliar atmosphere.
Speaking about sword, it remains me the ambiance of the movie Excalibur.
Did you find her ? Wink

What a beautiful place. It seems anywhere you pointed a camera you would get a nice photo.

The pictures are very nice.

I feel lot of Phytoncid around me. Nice shots.

THANKS all of you.

I am working with Attila to correct the sharpness problem. The images
straight out of the camera are so SHARP that I am getting "bite marks"
on my legs. Laughing In fact, this is the single major factor for me to keep
the camera. The first images I put up on my monitor blew me away for
sharpness.

There are small problems in the way Fuji set up their firmware, which add
up to being a pain in a** for some types of shooting. For me, it's not
really a problem at all, as I don't need the things that make for a
quicker camera.

As Patrick indicated, the Pacific Northwest is REALLY green this year,
because of cool moderated weather.

To djmike: The Western Red Cedar is definitely a phytoncidic plant.

No problems with the sharpness here.
Any mosquitoes?

No mosquitoes! They'll be late this year because of the cold weather the
past few months. It still has not warmed up to the average temperature
yet.

In about 1998 there were almost NO mosquitoes, and that was a very
cool Spring as well. Wouldn't that be nice? Very Happy

It was nice to be able to walk through the beauty, yet I could just lay down
and stare up at the canopy with no bug landing on me. Shocked

Sheesh! And here I thought I had settled on my big Dream Camera from Unexpected Windfall dilemma as a three way dither between whatever the top Pentax APS SLR is at the time, a full frame Canon digital, or the Fuji folder... with my sentiment running to the Fuji. But due to you Laurence and the simple cool/cute factor of the camera, I am now adding this wonderful piece to my Dream Smile

Very Happy Jussi, that Fuji folder has GOT to be pretty tempting. I just wish I
had lots and lots more money, know what I mean? But yeah...I'm
dreaming too.

Excellent rain forest pics Laurence. I know the dilemnas with pics in that environ having recently taken a few in what are locally known as CTRF and WTRF environs. mind you, my choice of lenses on the day didn't help.

Hey, I am glad you know the difficulties, and can appreciate them. I
assume you did not use any wide angle lenses? Those seem to be the
best focals to use in the rain forest conditions, at least for me.
