I bought a biotar recently but it seems to differ from other biotar I have seen on the web. It is black and has much more aperture blades. (app. 17-1Cool. And most disturbingly the min. focusing distance is longer (0.9m). Anyone know the detail of this lens?

Here are some sample fotos with sensia 100.

It's the well known black biotar - an early version one from late 40-ies.
It is a nice lens - maybe not that sharp as later ones but nice.

I do agree. I have compared the resolution at infinity with my super takumar 50/1.4 and have found that takumar has a significant lead despite the fact that the biotar has a 8mm advantage. However, i'm quite satisfied with the color and the bokeh of the lens.

Pre-war design, post-war manufactured Biotar 58/2 with longer min. focusing distance but the 18 blades and black color will have people on eBay pay more than 200 for it (based on ended auction listings and one I sold myself).

Technical quality not as good as later versions, but the diaphragm is perfectly round at all apertures. Put that into use when placing highlights in out-of-focus (in the bokeh) - later Biotar versions will make polygons, not nice round balls like yours.

Other than that it's a swirl and whirl Biotar - some love 'em, others hate them for the charasteristic fingerprint images captured with them show.

Thanks so much for explaining! I found this lens attached to a worn mtl50 in a flea market. I spent about 30 on it, wt a real bargain!
