How much for this type of lens?
What is cheaper brand?
And for a f1.4?
Thanks!

Do a completed listing search on ebay perhaps? Generally you're looking at £200.00 for an f1.2 and £60.00 for an f1.4.

What lens brand? New or old? For what camera?

I just bought a Pentax SMC(K) 50/1.2 for US$250. It is not much 'better' than a Sears-Tomioka 55/1.4 that cost US$2.25, less than 1/100 what the Pentax cost. A Yashica ML 50/1.4 cost me US$10.25. All these prices included shipping costs. If you search, and research, and bit patiently, you can find good deals. Good luck!

Hey hey I am interested in looking at some of the samples of your newly acquired 50/1.2

Back to the OP, the cheapest 1.2 lens would be Canon FL/FD, followed by Nikon 55/1.2. 1.2 is actually not much faster than 1.4, and consider that 1.2 lens usually have more elements, and if the coating is not as effective, the light transmission could be similar to that of a 1.4 lens. You are really paying a higher price for character and narrower DOF.

For 1.4 lens, cheapest one would be Canon FD, Minolta MC/MD last time I checked.

Picked up my Canon FL 55mm f1.2 for £39.12, including the postage on ebay. I picked up my Minolta Rokkor 58mm f1.4 for £14.46 including the postage on ebay. Its ok, but its nowhere near as good as the FL. Wink

I haven't seen these kinds of prices on the Bay for a while. I am not sure what brands but some brands are quite a bit higher.

Canon FLs and FDs seem to be far and away the cheapest 1.2s and shoot fine. Even the 450.00 nFD L is a bargin for what it can do.

the going rate for a decent FL is about 160+ and the standard nFD about 220+ (it is very light)

Don't look at buy it nows. Go for auctions. Saying that, there were two Minolta f1.4s on buy it nows for under £50.00 last night.

As far as auctions go, I bought a Yashica ML 50/1.4 and Pentax-M 50/1.4 for £30.00 each 3 months ago. I picked up a Contax Planar 50/1.4 for £18.00 last year and a Nikon 55/1.2 for just over £100.00. It's not difficult, you just need to look closely, particularly at camera bodies Smile

Good advice there!

One other type of lens that is as fast as 1.2 and very cheap and common on ebay is the Bell and Howell 2 inch (51mm) cine projector lens. I bought one for 8ukp to play with and it never arrived, sadly. Could be a cheap alternative for wide open narrow dof work?
