Price and Rareity Check

Hi,

I came close to buying a tamron lens and then the sale fell through. I may have the opportunity to get it again. However, being that my money is tight I can't get all of the ones I am looking at. I also don't want to overpay if a better deal could be forthcoming. So, my question is how rare are these lenses and what is a good value for them? Which one should I run and snatch?

Vivitar Series 1 24-48
Tamron SP 24-48
Tamron SP 80-200
Vivitar 120-600

Any feedback would be truly appreciated....

If those are indeed the Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 24-48mm f/3.5-3.8 and SP 80-200mm f2.8, I would jump at them.

Might depend on the mount that you are after.
What mount or mounts are you looking at?
OH

The Tamron 24-48mm is decent and should cost about £70 (half the price of current buy it nows). Buy in any mount and buy the correct Adaptall-2 bit afterwards for less than a tenner Wink

I only have the Vivitar S1 24-48 / 3.8, and like it a lot. It's a big heavy lens - short and fat with a 77mm filter ring. I use it a great deal on my Pentax K10 but less on my NEX. It always delivers great results, very little CA or distortion, and its sharp. It's usually quite cheap because it isn't as famous as some of the other Vivitar S1's.

From a purely practical point of view the 24-48 would be my first call. I checked the sold listings on ebay and it looks like £60 is the highest I would go for this lens. Particularly as you are likely to want a different adapter. And must pay postage.

Average sold prices at 1st Feb 2014 are £32, £39 & £45 on auction and £64 & £98 BIN. World wide.

My mount is Nikon...
My interest isn't in the quality of the lenses as I intend to get them all anyway. My interest is to know their rarity and what is a good price for them. This helps me decide on which ones to put my money toward FIRST.

Well the two 24-48mm lenses aren't rare.

The other two are harder to find. Your best to bet is to look at ebay completed auctions to see how many have passed through the system recently and for what price. That should be your best gauge.

Hmm, well..........
......if you are going to buy all of them, you will soon discover which ones are the hardest to find (rare).
If you are wanting a price guide, then as has already been suggested look at the prices of ebay completed listings - the green ones have sold, the red ones have not.
Be aware also that Vivitars come in fixed mount and Tamron SP is an adaptall 2 mount.

eeee....I think my empty stomach is making it hard for me to express myself clearly.

All four lenses are currently available for purchase at prices starting over $200.
I want them all, but can't afford them all. I will buy them all eventually, but since I can't do that now then I need to put them in a priorty list from the most rare to the least rare.
Which one of them is the hardest to get (rarest), so I can focus my attention and get THAT one first.

As I said, the last two are hardest to find, and I'd go for the 80-200mm if I were you. The two 24-48mm lenses are well overpriced at 200 dollars. They're not rare, so I would be patient and wait for them at a normal price.

Hi,
Like others already suggest,.my first choice would be Tamron 80-200 adaptall-2.
The 24-48 are way too expensive for 200$ are rather not rare at all!
Anyway, why put aprox. 800$ in 4 zoom lenses and not only 2 nikkon zoom lenses?

Yeah you are right. I am going to focus on the 80-200 adaptall-2. I already have lenses I need for my practical photography. I am in expansion mode as in buying extra macros to compare them with macros I have or buying certain lenses to fill in collection sets.

Oh, I see.
Yes the 80-200 is a good choice.
There is another Vivitar Series 1 lens that you might like to look out for that is more versatile than the two short zooms.
It is Vivitar Series 1 24-70. It is a Cosina made lens but very good indeed and sells for less than the other two.
It looks like this:

Here is a sample taken from a 6X4 print scanned on a cheap flatbed scanner.
The original is better than this and was taken ten years ago - the print is that old.
