interesting article. what i found curious was the instruction to turn off IS while making these tests. does this mean that IS interferes somehow with infinity sharpness, and if so is it thus a good idea to turn off IS in any situation where its not needed, ie, normal outdoor daytime shooting?

I understand that it's more related to the test itself and ensure consistency among the shots. Actually, I remember reading that IS had to be shut down while on tripod, as the IS was trying to compensate anyway, thus generating motion blur ! So for the sake of the test, it's worth shutting it down

IS on a tripod has the opposite effect. Like taking a medicament
with severe side effects when you're not sick.

i did not realise that. i very seldom use a tripod, but am glad to now be aware of IS limitations.
