Wonderful shots Tom!
Now that you have been using it, how does the 1.4 compare to the 1.8 in your experience? |

Thank you for the kind words.
Both lenses are simply wonderful - but not the same.
The 1.8/55 is naturally sharper at full aperture than the 1.4/55, as you would expect - but the 1.4/55 draws portraits softly, and is very flattering to the skin and skin tones. The 1.8/55 may be clinically sharper at f1.8 and it renders its bokeh in busy situations a little more harshly - but it is simply different and not unpleasant. The bokeh from the 1.4/55 is creamy smooth.
Closed down, even a bit, both lenses are very sharp. Aperture of f2.8 on the 1.4/55 is a sweet spot I think.
For value, the 1.8/55 is very hard to beat as it is so cheap. Incidentally, I also have the 2/55 and I think that it may be the same lens as the 1.8/55 but with a reduced maximum aperture. I can see little difference between them.
I like them both

Hey! I have a very similar imported plant here flowering (purple) now. Do you know the name? Thanks! |
This one is a variety of geranium.
I'm not sure which one

Thanks! I'm told "It grows wild in Ireland and Scotland. Brock gave me seeds a few years ago. I don't know it's Latin name. But Brock said his grandmother used to grow it around the doorways to deter mosquito s." Looks like Robert's but unlike Robert's this one has no scent, except maybe to mosquitoes. _________________ ☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮ like attracts like! ☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮

Thank you - Yes, I believe so - possibly designed by Kunio Shimada.
Great lens in my humble opinion

The most notable thing about it is the size of the rear element.
Compared to other 55mm f1.4 lenses it is huge
Tom |
About the same size as the rear element in the old Nikkor "S" 50mm f 1.4
I really should do some wide open shots with the A/I-s 50mm 1.4 I have here- but have been experiencing a bit of a wait for the lighting I'd like to use....

The lens has a similar configuration to the Pancolar 55mm f1.4 and some other fast German designs.
I like to think of it as a poor man's Pancolar.
There is much more information here:

(This is a brilliantly written and researched blog on old lenses and is highly recommended)
It is one of my favourite lenses for sure
