Poilu said,
the contax 85 1.4 is a exceptional lens
the only problem of all fast planar is sensor bloom in difficult light
in a studio this would never happen
I hope next generations of sensor will fix this issue
the contax 85 2.8 who is a sonnar doesn't have this issue and can be used in every challenging light

Wow...that's pretty bad...
can it be fixed in PP?
Is that a MMJ version?

only by desaturate
I never have bloom with this lens because I use it in the morning or evening when the light is 'good'
But it is not a lens for midday at the beach, theater and other bright light
Also the bloom is not so visible after F2.8
I just wanted to warn you that it is not a universal lens
Of course I would buy this lens again without thinking about, it is one of my top lenses

you can check the samples of the canon 85 1.2 L or 85 1.8, they all have the same problem
look for example the blue bloom on the eye of the turtle @ 1.4
photozone 85 1.2L test

hughing, Look out for the Nikon 85mm f1.4 / f2 also - both are well-respected.

After doing some searching I find people saying that the Nikkor 85/2.0 isn't quite as highly rated as the 105/2.5. The 1.4 version is good, but the 2.0 seems to have not such nice bokeh and also lesser build quality than the 105/2.5.

Welcome Ahmab!

Nikkor 105mm f2.5 AIS an exceptional glass, I don't think so possible to make better one, perhaps Carl Zeiss and Leica can make better, but I really don't think so. Compare to 85mm f2 to 105 mm not a justice Wink If you compare with other 85mm that is a really good lens.

I think Zuiko lenses are an option where Zeiss has a problem of too much light like 85/1.4 sensor bloom.

Zeiss Planar T* 85/1.4 is the first choice.

Zuiko 50/1.2 that is being mentioned is flat focal plane, often used for macro. It has soft even bokeh. It is really sharp. I thought mine was soft wide open. It was. I had the rear el replaced. Fungus had separated it. Zuiko has three quality levels. Their top level with ED glass ranks with any. It's like guitars, wine, lovers; different but about equal. And with 50mm-55mm, Zeiss did not do as well as in 21mm, 28mm, 85mm, 100mm, 180mm. For a standard lens I can use Zuiko 50/1.2 or Tomioka 55/1.2. Zuiko is a tiny bit sharper there, with smooth bokeh, and Tomioka 55/1.2 has weird good bokeh. Zeiss most of the time though.

I still have to get experience with Zuiko 1.2 and Tomioka and for Planar 85mm for sure.

Too bad Attila the Han, the last time I came here I should've brought Tomioka 55/1.2 with me. Smile

Zuiko 50/1.2 is soft at wide open but I prefer Zuiko than Nikkor 50/1.2, which is sharp even wide open.
I like Zuiko's colour more than Nikkor 50/1.2. Tomioka is certainly very sharp but it looses contrast at
wide open dramatically, its optical design is very similar to Zeiss 50/1.4. I guess Tomioka team studied
very hard Zeiss' optical design, but colour rendition is fairly different.
