I happened to spot a lens-like object in a bin for electronics trash at work. It's not normally what I would expect to see there so I couldn't resist picking it up.
I'm pretty sure it's a complete lens since it was attached to an old fashioned TV camera tube (Vidicon).
It's fixed focus (wide open) and no iris. The back focus seems to be very short as well.
By adding some adhesive tape on the barrel, I was able to fit it in to an M42 adapter and could try it on both DSLRs. So far I haven't been able to get a sharp image out of it. It's terrible on the Nikon and slightly better on the Pentax.
My guess is that it's set to focus on infinity and it seems to be a short telephoto in the 135 - 200mm area. The bokeh seems fine, the only problem is that it's all over the picture.
No manufacturer name or lens data.
Any idea what it could be?

On the Nikon

On the Pentax

I like the dog pic. Just a little more contrast maybe. That "soft" look is hard to get. People pay a lot of money for a "soft focus" lens. Hard to get a natural softness like that in pp. I think I'd work with it a little more and see what you can do with it.

Curious why there was that much difference between the cameras unless it was more from lens position..

A bit more contrast with the help of PS. It came out quite low in contrast so I wanted to show it like that.
The difference between the cameras could perhaps be because the lens is operating further away from it's intended position vs the image plane on the Nikon.
I will try it out a bit more and perhaps try to stop it down a bit with a disc if that proves possible.

Maybe some type of 1.5 or 2times extender ?
I have a canon moviecam 1.5x extender that is exactly the same type of construction but for the screwmount at the back

normaly if you can look through it with your bare eye and see a focused picture through it with the one eye that is slightly bigger than with the other eye it is an extender (looking through a lens normally a focused picture is not possible)

If I look through it with my eye it's only sharp at close distance (like a magnifying glass). I'm not sure if that is consistent with the extender theory.
I tried to stop it down by putting in a circular disc with a smaller opening and that enhanced the sharpness. Still not exactly Carl Zeiss but sharper at least.
