Because the AI is the preferred version, followed by the AI-S version...simple as that....having had one non-AI single coated and the AI as well as the AI-S version, the versions with the longer focus throw are much more user friendly.

Anyone who is familiar with the lenses or has investigated the lenses(which I would hope Ian did before the purchase),will see the obvious differences between the versions.

Have you never met anyone who prefers the shorter focus throw ?

Don't be silly....I've never met anyone who preferred a shorter focus throw.

Well, I do sometimes. If the throw is too long, it's difficult to focus quickly.

Which of your lenses do you use primarily for their shorter focus throw?

Lenses that acquire the quickest focus are the sharpest with the most contrast at various f stops, irregardless of focus throw.

Typically lenses with the shortest focus throw are the most difficult to acquire precise focus.

Primarily, none of course. But I do prefer half turn throw on most Japanese fast 50's to almost a full turn on Meyer-Oreston. Sure, I would take a sharper lens with longer throw over the softer lens with shorter throw, no question (unless there are other factors to consider too).

Precision focus only requires a small amount of the total throw....resulting in longer focus throw lens being more precise.

Which is a good thing for shooting at larger apertures. At f8, it becomes less important.

Still I prefer a long throw too, usually also means a closer mfd.

My Konica Hexanon 4/21 has an insanely long focus throw, which scarcely seems necessary on such a wide lens with such dof.

Coversely I have a Kowa 28mm with a very short focus throw, maybe 90 degrees, and that is always annoying.

Well, it's all a matter of suitable compromise. For precision focusing longer throw has an advantage, but if you need to refocus quickly, it takes forever to go from infinity to portrait or street shot range with a long throw. I would think that for 24/f2.8 half turn throw would be perfect.

Yup...160° of focus throw is much easier then the 80°

From the ebay/uk site it looks like the lens has a serial number of 257784,which is the same as my old single coated version.

So it's an early '71. I looked at the auction too. Smile Looked like a really good deal, hopefully the fungus is minor.

Yup, I forgot the serial was in the listing, I should read more carefully Wink

70-71 with Factory AI Kit 23 fitted is what I think it is, but to me the different versions aren't that important, they are all very good from what I've seen from samples and the key factors are sharpness and distortion, contrast and colours are less important and can be addressed in post.

For the uses I'll be putting it to, I doubt I'll have any issues with the single coating.

Just hope the fungus isn't too bad, if it's just on the inside of the front element then it should be easy enough to clean.

I have another bargain buy to clean too, this one might be rather more challenging though:
