I still recommend the Tamron SP 60-300 or SP 5.6/300 + SP 2xTC. The zoom gives flexibility.

I've had excellent results with the Tamron SP 60-300 and Tamron SP 70-210 19AH, both with Tamron SP 2x teleconverter Smile

Nah! Find a Tamron SP 500/8. I know a dealer in the UK with a used one for £60.00 which will be miles better.

The old Soviet made mirror lenses are inexpensive (the basic 500/8-models) and tiny, yet offer decent image quality, superior to the cheap western mirror lenses of today.

Some suggest a zoom with a teleconverter - that, however, is not to be recommended in general. The teleconverter basicly crops the center of the image circle and magnifies this to the camera. This means that you need rock solid glass for teleconverters. Also since the converters slow the lenses down, a fast lens is required to begin with. Carl Zeiss Jena 300/4 gives a spelendid resolution wide open with a teleconverter. The older zebra version can ofen be found on eBay in the 100 euro neighbourhood. A proper teleconverter would be (for APS-C) a KOHBEPTEP or (any) East German one.

Fish, I didn't recommend AF Tamrons. The lenses I meant are SP Adaptall-2 MF:
http://www.adaptall-2.com./lenses/54B.html
http://www.adaptall-2.com./lenses/23A.html
coupled with the SP 2xTC: http://www.adaptall-2.com./lenses/01F.html

To use these you'll also need a separate AD-2 adapter which suits your camera mount, M42 for instance. If you're using a Canon DSLR you can now buy cheap non-OEM AD-2 adapters for EF.

$100 is possibly a bit tight to get the whole lot, you may need to go up to $120-150. But you can often find them being sold together as one lot, which usually works out cheaper than buying sperately.

There have been some truly brilliant bird pictures on the forum using these lenses in the past. Sadly the pics I'm thinking of seem to have been taken down, otherwise I would give you a link. If Rob Leslie is still around I'm sure he'll show you some.

Think about Sigma 400 APO , very small like a 300mm lens image quality is pretty good , handy light weight and not mirror lens. I did like it. If you would like to take it be careful there is an older MC marked one what is super crap!

Probably has the adapter on it.Or he just dosen't know the difference.
My 400mm Seimar I ordered was listed as Minolta mount and it was a Canon mount.

By the way. Brand new Vivitar Series 1 500mm f8 mirror lens you can get brand new including shipping for $102. It's tmount so you would need an adapter. Adapter $8.

On eBay they have a Vivitar Series One 450mm f4.5 mirror - I've never heard of it, but people on this forum seem to like Series One...

Well, the lens in question is a zoom and in general zooms and teleconverters are a no-no, especially lenses with large zoom factor, and especially older zooms. For me an addtional problem is the complexity of zooms - too many moving parts for just two hands to handle Smile
