This is curious. Last time I used this lens I was quite displeased by the results after having praised this lens. My pic was pretty unsharp on the edges.
Out of curiosity I mounted the lens again today and tested it from my window and it was perfect. Maybe it fixes itself over time. _________________ Lumens Pixel

It's probably wobbly so sometimes it's good and other times bad depending in how centered it still is. _________________ pentaxian |

Most probably. I shook it a bit and played with the rings to see if it would get misaligned. So far so good. _________________ Lumens Pixel

Maybe not the same overall construction, but on the topic of wobble-
Interesting with some one touch telephoto zooms, even if there's some play in the grip and it isn't a perfect fitting, it doesn't mean the front section with the front lens group will wobble too.
But on some, a wobbly grip does actually mean a wobbly front section. I have an Ozeck 35-150mm f3.5-4.5 which sadly does this and resolution just seems generally low. Is this the cause? Who knows...
In addition, I wonder if at all possible for it to be tightened up. Or is there just some natural play? |

General poor build so the lens got out of spec with use, maybe it got dropped and whacked too much. I have a lens that I can focus to infinity but when I wobble it a bit everything is out of focus again, it has both lateral and planar wobble. Very poor contrast, you had to be very careful not to wobble after achieving focus. I got a better copy. That was fine. _________________ pentaxian |

With some (prime) lenses I could deal with the wobble by tightening the screws (which may got lose over time or someone didn't "CLA" properly). Of course, there was nothing mechanically wrong and the zooms are more complicated. Canon nFD has got a reputation for porous bearings, which is why I avoid those. Apparently there are so many bad copies around (or good copies about to go bad). |

I do not know if this lens has the famous rotten bearings which Volker knows too well. Since it's in the lowly range of the FD lenses maybe it was blessed with the cheap nylon ones. _________________ Lumens Pixel

Well, unfortunately it does. It's an "older" style two-ring zoom and the construction is about the worst regarding the rotten rubber bearings since they are quite difficult to extract in most samples. By design, the nFD 35-70 mm f/4 is an outstanding lens, optically as good as the final version of the Minolta MD 35-70 mm f/3,5, but the mechanical construction is a pure nightmare.

Hélas... Do you know how compares the nFD 35 70 F3,5 4,5 to the f4? If it is nylon made and as good as the former I do not care much about the half stop at 70mm. _________________ Lumens Pixel

I remember reading a comparison of the two 35-70 mm Canon nFD in the swiss photo magazine "Photographie" back in the 1980s. As far as I can recall, the older 35-70 mm f/4 was slightly better than the 35-70 mm f/3,5-4,5 but the differences were not that important. The newer one has Nylon bushings like the 28-55 mm. It just doesn't feel very nice in actual use as its completely clad in plastics. |
