My first day with the CZJ Sonnar 135

Yesterday I got my first manual lens - Sonnar 135mm f3.5. Luckily enough, my m42-eos adapter arrived the same day.

I'm very impressed so far. I think it's the sharpest lens I've own and it's really fun shooting with it. The only thing I'll see into is the m42 adapter with AF confirm, I find it uncertain to focus only in viewfinder with no other help. (btw. do you guys have positive experiences with those?)

Boring motives, it's been raining for the last couple of days here, but I'm pretty much satisfied with how they turned out.

not easy with the 450D, small viewfinder and pentamirror
manual focusing screen can help but still focus is not easy
liveview or AF confirm is ok for static subject

Yes, liveview is good, only it's a bit clumsy if you're not shooting on a tripod (with the 5x or 10x magnification).
The AF confirm adapter seems fine, but I've heard elsewhere that it's not accurate and can even cause problems with the electronics. Not sure if that's true, I think I read it on POTN forums...

But it's certainly fun to manual focus, I've noticed I pay more attention to the composition that way. Very Happy

Thanks for the info! Smile
I got my regular one from Big_is, but I think I'll get the AF confirm also, they're not to expensive.

I have another newbie question, but I'll post it here, I don't want to create another thread.

I already saw it mentioned before. When I stop down the aperture (f8 etc) on the lens, the image always comes out over-exposed. The solution obviously is to put the exposure compensation to -1 or so value.. But I'm interested what causes it to over-expose (I shoot always in aperture mode)?

The EMF chipped adapters, such as those from big_is, allow you to adjust the AF confirm as someone else mentioned above. Really useful. They also let you program the length of the lens and maximum aperture. I find these adapters tend to overexpose less when you stop down, but some manual adjustment will still probably be necessary.

BTW, non-adjustable AF confirm adapters are a waste of time.

Great first shots! This was my first additional lens too, many years ago now Smile

DSLRs with APS-C sensors and small dark viewfinders like the 450D and my 400D are pretty useless for manual focussing, they're really just glorified P&S cameras with interchangeable lenses. The designers never envisaged anyone would ever want to use MF lenses on them, especially old lenses designed for 35mm SLR cameras! Smile I changed my focussing screen and I use an AF adapter but neither is really effective. Just keep shooting more and more and you'll get a better feel for it. And remember, most of us here waste hundreds of shots because of poor focussing.

It's nice to see you write that using MF makes you think about composition. If you use the camera in Manual mode (or even better, use an old basic film cam) you find yourself thinking carefully about the lighting conditions, shutter speeds, aperture sizes, ASA speeds and depth of field, and that's the fun of real photography. By then you're truly hooked, and soon you'll want to start shooting film and doing your own processing! Very Happy

Thanks for the kind words and info, guys! Very Happy

@Peter: I know what you mean, I have to say I'm tempted to try film every time I see great images here on the forums. One day I hope I will. Smile

I storongly disagree - just try to manual focus with P&S cameras, it's next to imposssible Smile

(Also calling them glorified P&S cameras with interchangable lenses implies that you also mean that the image quality and other features are on P&S-level, which I am sure we both agree, is not the case. I am sorry - I am a bit anal today Wink .)

But I agree in that the viewfinders are not really that good on them cameras - when I moved from Canon 350D to Pentax K20D, the VF was one of the first differences I noticed. And now that I have the 1.3x enlarger, it was like a jump to a different world yet again.

John, my reply was in direct response to Anu's anal post in the football thread. Maybe you didn't see it.
