This is absolutely nothing compared to some results that I've seen here and elsewhere. But I post here to learn. Please let me know what could be done better (apart from weather which is horrible and beyond my control!).

Camera mounted on tripod and I used remote release to minimise shake. These are processed in LR for sharpening and NR and also cropped.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I used a 2X converter making it effectively 2000mm.

I tried a similar method using a 400mm with a 3X converter and got similar results. My shots were affected by very thin cloud, a bit of camera shake (even with a tripod and self timer) and a no-name converter.

Next time I will use the lens without the converter and crop the result. I will also find a way to use the energy-sapping properties of a bean bag. An absolutely clear, dry atmosphere seems to be a must too.

I am sure someone with more experience will offer better advice here soon - I only know what I did wrong, not how to be absolutely sure how to get it right (yet).

ps: If my maths is correct, a 2X converter would make a 500mm lens effectively a 1000mm lens, rather than 2000mm.

Thanks Skida. Good suggestions. Hopefully we will get good weather sometime in the summer so will try then. The 2x converter along with the 2x crop factor of E-p2 makes it 2000mm effectively, sorry should have been more clear.
