Once I mixed a rest Tetenal Ultrafin and Rodinal working solutions and got suprisingly thick negatives, even hard to recoginze for the scan-software, but anyway interesting.



Anyone also made such experiments?

you got tghick negatives because rodinal has a high ph and drove the tetenal developer into high activity overedeveloping the negatives. yes, i spose most of us have tried various things. i haven't done anything wild though for decades. more inteerst in quality now.

you can try XTol+Rodinal combination, start first with Xtol 1+1/ Rodinal 1+100 dilution and ~10min/20°C developing for classic emulsions, then adjust dilution and developing according to your needs

this combo makes really nice results once you achieve to adjust the process. it makes fine grain and smooth gradation, but the grain is still sharp.

it would be better to split the development between two developers, with a good wash in between. mixing them does not have the same effect. especially whn they are wildly different ph.

Today I developed my veery first film. After much reading in advance I like to dive in at the deep end. I had been shooting lab developed XP2 Super and it just lacked the film look for me so I mixed my own brew of Xtol 1:3 & Rodinal 1:100. I developed for 10mins at 20deg but it was not as bright as I would have liked so I lightened in PP. Here is the finished article. Next time I think 11mins and go from there..

*Note light leak mid way down photo. The camera back was opened by mistake if I remember rightly so it trashed a few shots but I got most of them.

Here is a self developed shot scanned with v600 on default settings and resized and tagged only.

Tri-X 400@800 developed in Xtol 1:3 + Rodinal 1:100
17 mins (I guessed as first try)
20 degs
ARAX CM + Sonnar 180/2.8 medium format

A pleasing result

How long would you have developed for if it was shot at 400??
