An example of this lens was listed on ebay recently and the seller indicated that "all rings move". In this case "all rings move SMOOTHLY". The lens has been stripped and the focussing, preset and step down mechanisms cleaned (removal of 40 year old lumpy hydrocarbon) and relubricated.
I have resisted the temptation to polish the metal and re-ink the lettering - it's hard to do it well. There are one or two dust particles betwen the elements but I don't think that it's worth cleaning the glass at the moment.
Here are two pics.
apparent marks on the glass are reflections - no scratches.
I gave the lens a spin today - both pics at f/8 - square crops from full size frame reduced using Bicubic Sharper (no in-camera or post sharpening).
Pics were taken at close distance (~1.5 m) using a Kood (glass adapter) on a Nikon D40x. Using this arrangement I can reach a few metres but not much more. The problem arises (I think) because of the small registration (45.2 mm) of this lens compared to the longer (45.5 mm) length of the normal M42 registration. This difference may not seem to be very large but the total travel of the lens (from close to infinity) is less than 3 mm. One half of this covers the distance from ~1 m to infinity. Clearly my camera-adapter combination is unable to accomodate the difference. Perhaps your's can ? _________________ John
