The bottom of that page shows many of the physical differences between the different lens versions and variations that are important to me to help differentiate the different lens models.
Most of my listings came from eBay where there are often numerous pictures of a lens to properly identify its version and some minute details that actually make for differences within a single lens model and version. Other numbers were collected using pictures on Flickr, Google pictures search and other forums where some members may actually show their lenses. The listing is slowing down due to the fact there is very little new offerings on eBay ( 9 out of 10 listings that appear each day for Minolta SLR lenses i already have and i can tell you that some lenses have been for sale on eBay for the whole 9 months or so that i started to collect these numbers)
For example on the MC Rokkor-PG 1:1.4 F=50mm, to me for accurate data accumulation, i check for:
- Rokkor-PG OR Rokkor-X PG (in orange color)and i register the orange color Rokkor-X in my database.
- Type of the lens Mount index ( either painted red dot or Red Plastic Bubble that is sometimes missing but shows a bigger black circle)
- number of waffle rows ( this lens has the rubber waffle design and some lenses had varied designs )
My first goal was to list mainly early SR/MC lenses since any Minolta lenses of the early era mostly had serial numbers starting with 110XXXX and was wondering if each lens had its own series of serial numbers ( this way there would be serial numbers duplicated on different lens models) or since it was pretty much the beginning of the SLR era and sales of these could not be that huge then there would be no duplicate serial numbers. I still don't know since i have not sorted it yet ( and will not until i am at least at 10000 numbers)
As i was slowly accumulating these, i expanded slowly by including later MC and MD Rokkor lenses and since all of the Minolta lenses have 7 digits ( except the teleconverters with 6 digits and the later MD lenses sub-contracted out of Minolta which had 8 digits) and all pre MD lenses had their serial number on the ring around the front of the lens. they were quite easy to register. Starting with most MD lenses, the serial numbers moved to the lens barrel close to the lens mount and these are more difficult to catch since some pictures don't show this.
I know for a fact the Minolta made over 10 million SLR lenses ( i almost got the 10 million lens which was a MD Zoom Rokkor 75-200 F 4.5 which is a lens that was available around 1978-1981 which is late in the production of Minolta MF lenses for SLR's.
My goal is first to attain the 10000 mark which would represent a merger 0,1% of production but can serve as a nice sampling to evaluate production of each lens model (assuming all of the serial numbers were sequential ) and once i am there, i will look at sorting and analyzing the data i have accumulated.
From the present database, i already see some trends but i still feel my sampling is still a little small for a good analysis at this point.
I also made some mistakes on my early data collecting of some MD lenses and require more data so i can properly re-identify some of these.
Thanks to all that are submitting serial numbers here but i may require more info on some specific lenses due to the fact that some are not necessarily easy to position properly in the database with the data you supplied. For example in the MC1 and MC2 lenses ( the ones with the metal ribbed focusing rings that changed from flat bottom to concave ribs), there was often a serial number overlap from one series to the other as if Minolta had continued making the old MC1 lens while also making the MC2 and this made the serial numbers overlap. These overlaps are sometimes much bigger than one might think ( last MC1 58mm F 1.4 lens S/N is 5561570 and first MC2 58mm F 1.4 s/N is 5508360 with around 80 serial numbers overlapping at the present time) so to keep things as accurate as possible, i need info on the focusing ring type to differentiate these.
For easier data entry of any MC Lens, i need:
- The complete front ring marking in the proper order Some early Sr lenses did not show "Lens Made in Japan" on the front barrel. Some very early ones had LV numbers on the aperture rings and i also record their presence or not.
- wether the focusing ring is the metal ribbed type with flat bottom (MC1), concave ribs( MC2) or the number of Waffle row dots from front to rear on MC-X type lenses
- wether the lens mount index for MC-X type lenses is a paint dot or a plastic bubble ( can be missing which creates a round hole of approx 2 mm diameter.
For easier data entry of any MD Lens, i need:
- The complete front ring marking in the proper order
MD1 type lenses would be marked as: MD ROKKOR ( or Rokkor-X in Orange) 1:1.4 f=50mm MINOLTA LENS MADE IN JAPAN ( i can live with M LMIJ as a short way)
MD2 type lenses would be marked as: MD ROKKOR ( or Rokkor-X in either orange or white) 50mm 1:1.4 LENS MADE IN JAPAN ø55mm (or ø49mm) MINOLTA
MD3 type lenses would be marked as: MD 50mm 1:1.4 JAPAN ø49mm JAPAN

Both lenses above are non-macro lenses.
They are otherwise identical, but now as I compared them,
I found a large flat surface screw on the diaphragm ring of the 800... lens.
It is by the serieal number.
Later lens has a continuous ring with no screws at all.
There is more lenses somewhere. I'll dig them up later and make a new post. |
