Yep, one of the all-time greats, and it can often be picked up for an inexpensive amount on eBay. I have an early 55/3.5 Micro Nikkor (about 1965, as I recall) that I've owned since around 1990 or so and I've always been pleased with the results it delivers.
Until quite recently, the 55/3.5 was at the heart of my slide duplication outfit, and it worked magnificently. I'd set it to f/8 to give me enough depth of field so that minor variations in the slides surface wouldn't affect sharpness. F/8 is also right in the middle of that lens's sweet spot. I write "until quite recently" because recently I've replaced it with a 55/2.8 AIs, which I believe is even sharper! Hard to believe, but tests I've conducted indicate that the 55/2.8 is just a tad sharper. So it gets the nod for slide dupe duty.
Nonetheless, I've owned my old beat-up 55/3.5 for so long that I've become rather attached to it. It's such a good lens, and for the price I could get for it on eBay, it's just not worth it to me. I'd rather keep it. _________________ Michael
