Wouldn't any large aperture triplet do ?
Collecting aside, there are alternatives.

Looks old, is this a rare Hugo Meyer lens?

I suggest the silver one. I have both but the silver one has 15 blades and M42 mount. If you like bokeh you will love it.
I use for taking picture of flower and mostly wide open.

Very Happy

If it's rare, i don't know. But it has 18 blades, and has markings in FEET and its focal length is marked 4 1/4 INCH.

Is it named Hugo Meyer? Do you have a serial number?
It looks like one of those Trioplan lense that get high prices on Ebay - but I am not a collector who knows whether this is collectible or not.

Is the softness of the central flower (violet) on purpose to make it look like painting, or it's the limitation of the lens?

wide open the lens is soft, but this is part of its charm Smile

I found the Meyer Diaplan 100mm/2.8 and Pentacon AV 100mm/2.8 as Trioplan 100 alternatives - seem like ~100% copy's, but without iris, and one need to tinker.

yep, the little-sister trioplan 2.9/50!
A (yet) budget lens that somehow fulfill my loss after selling the m42 red v trioplan 2.8/100mm Cool
I have got one attached to an exakta camera and can adapt it successfully to my nex3 and canon 5d2.. Very Happy
