I've seen these labelled as Focal, Hanimex, J.C. Penney, Makinon, Promaster, Telesor and Toyo. The specifications sound ordinary, but the lenses are notable for having their zoom rings ahead of their focus rings and therefore having non rotating front elements and accessory threads.
Theses lenses are nothing special optically, but I think they deserve recognition for advancing beyond the (accursed!) rotating filter thread found on most zoom lenses from the 1970s - 80s. |

I find the constant f3,5 for the 28-80 interesting. Should I start looking for one ? Sure, It's Christmas time. _________________ 🙋 My wishlist: Titan or Idaho 135/1,8 Nikon Df Nikkor 105/1,8 35/1,4 85/1,4

I'd suggest trying any of extreme zooms:
3.3-4.5/24-50mm
3.3-3.8/24-35mm
2.8/35-70mm
2.8-4.5/28-80mm
Not due stellar performance but fun. Flares, distortions, macro as soft focus effect. _________________ ---------------------------------

Of course you should, Phalbert.
Just don't expect miracles from it.

Exactly. My Toyo 28-80 f/3.5 isn't a perfect pixel peeping lens, but I enjoy owning and using it anyway. |

Ya. Actually I'm not too much worried about sharpness. I like biggish heavy manual focus lenses (like the Viv S1 35-85/2, But is the Toyo not the same as the Makinon ? There is one right now on ebay but the seller doesn't ship outside the US... 😕 _________________ 🙋 My wishlist: Titan or Idaho 135/1,8 Nikon Df Nikkor 105/1,8 35/1,4 85/1,4

They appear to be the same lens, but I don't have any documentation.
For what it's worth, I've seen some copies of this 28-80mm with 67mm filter threads and some with 72mm. Apart from that though, they appear similar. |

Thanks 55. Before reading this thread I had never even heard of 28-80 with a constant f3,5. There were the 2,8 - 4 in many brand flavours, and then a few 35-105 f3,5. So the 72mm filter ring was to be expected, but 67mm is even more of a feat for the time. Thanks again. _________________ 🙋 My wishlist: Titan or Idaho 135/1,8 Nikon Df Nikkor 105/1,8 35/1,4 85/1,4
