Thanks Poilu, I think my sample must be a bit off. Mine flairs like crazy. By far the worst of any lens I own... Nuts

I am sorry to learn that. I had high expectations for QC (quality control) of contax but after Orio mint 300mm level of CA's, it seems that some lens have serious problems

Is this the 35-70 3.4 macro? How close does it focus?

In a previous replies I wrongly defined the 35-70 as a 1:2 macro lenses
In fact the 35-70 is 1:2.5; on my crop it focus a target of 5.4 cm where a 1:2 focus 4.4 cm
some of my samples are cropped and could give the impression that the 35-70 have a bigger ratio

Would it be reasonable to say that one should expect to pay at least USD300.00 for one of these lenses?

most find 35-70 not a practical range and prefer wider zoom or just primes
this lens is not overlooked and can be found sometimes for less on the bay

This was how I always thought of the 35-70 range, and I preferred the 28-85. A couple of years ago, on a foreign trip, I took a bunch of wide primes from 21 to 35, my 50, and my 28-85. Looking back over my returned film, I was surprised how many of my shots were taken with the 35 and 50 primes, and even when using the 28-85, how many of those were around the middle of the range. This led me to packing my Yashica 35-70 more often, and recently reading in a few sources about what a corking performer the Contax 35-70 was, I bought one. So far, I've not had a chance to take it out for some exercising, but the shots in this thread, and in articles I've seen in the better press where it's been used, reassure me that my first ever Zeiss zoom has been a wise buy. I guess the conservative range means fewer problem areas for lens designers and consequently fewer compromises on optical quality.
