Good day

I am about to buy an adapter to let me fit M42 lenses on
a FD mount canon camera. The adaptor is mechanical, so
no glass is fitted. Can I expect full quality/usage of
the M42 lens on the canon camera ?

Also, Will it give me trouble focusing to infinity ?

Thank you.

I do not think there are too many Canon FD users here, at least did not hear from them recently.

Most of us mount our M42 with adapters to our camera so that should not be any different with your Canon FD. There should not be any problem focus to infinity with most of the M42 lenses unless the M42 to Canon FD adapter is not properly manufactured - too thick or too thin. Make sure you ask the seller about focusing to infinity with the adapter.

Hmm

I use Canon T70, Canon A1 and Canon FTb almost daily! They all work ok with my M42 adapter... esp the T70..

So that's one FD user! lol

Second user over here.

No problem at all. Everything will work fine.

I use gossen light meter, I don't check the A1's one, may be wrong.

What is your experience about A1's light meter usage with mflenses nemesis101? [ Your username sounds Greek to me Laughing ]

Canon used to make original adapters, called Mount Converters, for fitting other lenses to manual focus Canon reflex bodies. The model "P" is for using M42 lenses and there are other compatibles, mostly reverse-engineered versions of that, and if they are well made then there would not be any problem.

Seele,

yes I know, I've watched one P type original adaptor on ebay but I lost it.

The problem is when I used Av and gave aperture f/3.5, A1 gives 5.6 [light meter].

I don't trust it.

Have you checked the original adaptor and there isn't any issue?

Angelo - Metering with the FD/M42 adapters can only be done in "stop-down" method. I had no problems with my F1 body getting accurate readings. On the AE1 (and probably A1) I think you will have to press the lens stop-down switch which will tell the camera to go into stop-down reading mode. It's easy to check if you're getting a correct reading if you start by taking a reading with an FD lens first. And I suppose the same system would work on the T family as well.

One little tip - make sure you secure the adapter fully on the body to get correct infnity focus.

I use it only that with an original Canonflex, 1959 model, no TTL metering, so no problem here at all.
