I'm looking for a good telephoto prime for use on my 10MP Olympus E-510.
I've got a mirror Tamron 500SP F8 but it lets down A LOT on per pixel sharpness.
It doesn't have to be that fast, I favor image quality, portability and price.

How good is the TELE-TAKUMAR 300mm f 6.3 ?
And the Soligor 300mm f/5.5?
Should I go with Nikkor instead?

Thanks!

Best 300mm I've used is the Tamron SP 5.6 - very sharp and compact. The Nikkor 4.5 is very good but I wouldn't say it was better. Supposedly the non-IF ED Nikkor is superb with the IF version being extremely good but both fetch a premium.

I can only comment on the Tele-Tak 300. I've seen images at 16x20 and I think one was 20x30....sharp and beautiful. The beauty of the images is etched in my memory.

Seems to me, that a print made from a lens, especially a larger print, would be a good "proof" of quality.

How much does the Tamron 300mm f4.5 (regular version) fall behind the SP version?
Will the regular version still out-resolve my Olympus E-510 10MP?

Took a quick look at what strange creatures might be lurking on the bay. Could not find the Tamron 300mm SP but that shows up often and would be worth fishing for.

This nikkor looked promising

Fishing the bay is dangerous, do your due deligence but the seller has decent feedback and is a steely dan fan.

Atilla can tells us about the

There is an outside chance this

is the beloved tamron sp 300, I remember reading it was also sold by other manufacturers. It has the built in hood, looks similar, not identical, might be worth checking filter size, curious what more knowledgable people think.

The Tair is on the bay too but without the photosniper assembly. It only meets part of your criteria, it is sharp but heavy. Photosniper means a gun like focusing mechanism. Actually used by Russian spies to photograph (and scare) people entering American embasies years ago. Incredible novelty, I have the TAIR-3S but regret not getting it with the gun assembly (photosniper). Some russian lens web sites sell it new if interested.

Currently I follow a Tamron SP 300mm f5.6 on Ebay UK. I yield you to get it if you want.

I have no experience with Tokina and Kilfitt.

Tamron SP and Nikkor both are great lenses.

The Nikkor 300mm ED lenses are universally regarded as top notch and well above their own NIkkor predecessors in quality.

I can confirm! ED glass is the best version.

For £62.25 it was a steal! Unfortunately and despite my best efforts, the seller wouldn't ship abroad...

Do you realise this is an older Adapt-a-matic lens? If it has the mount you need then no problem, but you won't be able to use the normal Adaptall-2 mounts. My guess this lens is pretty average - I wouldn't risk my money on it without trying it first.

I have the Adapt-a-matic 200/3.5 - the little brother of that first one - and I find it to be very good indeed.

I would be interested in getting the 300mm Adapt-a-matic myself. I think a reasonable price would be about $30.

Its true that the mounts are not easy to come by, you would have to buy a lens with the right mount if that one doesn't have it already.

An alternative mounting workaround I have heard of is to use an adapted 58mm filter (take out glass, grind down to leave just the female thread) plus a reverse adapter.

The mount is identical to this:
This is M42 right? I believe there is a common adapter to 4/3!

That is an M42.

More, its not really an adapt-a-matic. I believe its a fixed mount, with what may be an aperture linkage for the later Spotmatics. I'd heard that some adapt-a-matic series lenses were made in fixed mount, and this seems to be one of them.

Well, I got it:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=130245523181

but for a WHOLE lot more than the 30$ it was valued it in this thread.
Hell, I'll pay more than that just in shipping, and I hope not to pay as much in customs... Sad

But what the heck, it's looks like the most beautiful lens I've ever seen (for this specific age!)
